Why I Switched from Photographer to Social Media Manager (And How It Changed Everything)

I started as a photographer because I loved telling stories and capturing everlasting memories through visuals. It was also something I studied so naturally went with it.

I primarily used social media to market myself and it wasn’t until someone asked me to manage their account that I realised I liked this, I was good at it and enjoyed it.

I wasn’t just taking pictures I was already doing social media without calling it that. Creating stories. Captions. Planning content. Watching engagement. I just didn’t know the name for it at the time.

Some other factors that influenced the switch was the pandemic I couldn’t shoot and I was a new business making it even harder to stand out and grow.

And I wanted some more stability and security with that regular income and service.

I was scared to start over. I had imposter syndrome But every step forward made me feel more confident and more aligned in my decision to switch.

Now, I get to help clients show up consistently, strategically and in a way that actually drives towards their goals for success. Whilst still being creative and including my skills as a photographer with visually aesthetic social media content.

Sometimes the thing you’re meant to do is hiding inside what you’ve already been doing.

I grew my 6K Instagram Following entirely organic (no paid ads)

And this is how I did it…

Just me, my phone, and a strategy that I figured out through a whole lot of trial and error. So you don’t have to.

Honestly? It didn’t happen overnight. There were weeks when I felt like no one was watching, when I’d post something I was proud of and it barely reaching anyone.

But I kept showing up. I kept tweaking. I kept learning what actually works and Posting consistently the whole time.

Here’s what made the biggest difference:
- I stopped posting what I thought looked good and started posting what people actually needed and wanted to see from me.
⁣
- I leaned into Reels and most recently carousels that got me the highest visibility with content that showed my personality and positioned me as someone worth following.
⁣
- Engagement really makes a huge difference.
⁣
- I studied my insights and used them to work smarter, not harder.
⁣
- The first 1k followers are the hardest but after this it’s a lot easier to grow as you know more about your community and audience.

Now I help other businesses do the same.

Your content deserves more than silence…

And those decreased likes are likely due to….

No clear call to action or Hook.

Low quality content both visuals and videos (nobody wants to see a blurry image and it looks bad on you as a business)

Inconsistent or over posting (your audience aren’t seeing your content or they are bored of your content)

You’re not speaking directly to your ideal audience (if you’re not speaking to them how can they find you and engage)

You’re not posting engagement focused content (example entertainment or relatable)

Your business deserves to be seen, liked, shared and followed.

“It’s all going in the right direction, thank you”

These are the exact words my social media management client told me just 2 weeks in of working together.

They also told me they have never received as many notifications as they have since I came onboard.
