It’s with a truly heavy heart that I share the passing of Roger Chivers, USCG Rescue Swimmer #171.
I had the honor of having Roger as my A-School Chief and instructor. As I was getting ready to graduate and head off to Kodiak, he looked at me with that familiar smile and said, “You’re going to have an amazing time there. Enjoy all of it.” He was absolutely right—I did. That simple moment, his encouragement, has stayed with me ever since.
Roger left a lasting impact on so many of us in the Rescue Swimmer community. His presence, mentorship, and courage helped shape the path for countless swimmers who followed in his footsteps.
I’m incredibly grateful I had the chance to sit down and record with him. During our conversation, he shared the story of the most intense rescue of his career—earning the Distinguished Flying Cross for saving three people from a raft in 25-foot seas, 50-knot winds, and near-freezing water while stationed in Sitka, Alaska. It was a story I hadn’t known until that day, and I’m honored to have helped share that piece of his legacy.
Fair winds and following seas… clear skies and a strong tailwind, Roger. You will be deeply missed—and never forgotten.
