In a powerful testament to Ukrainian ingenuity and unbreakable will, Antonov has completed the deep modernization of a legendary Ruslan transport aircraft—transforming it from a grounded shell into a soaring symbol of defiance.
The effort began in 2021 with one goal: to replace outdated Russian components with Ukrainian and Western technology. But in 2022, as Russia launched its brutal full-scale invasion, the project came to a sudden halt. The aircraft lay disassembled—its future uncertain, its home under fire.
Yet Ukraine does not abandon its dreams.
Through war, air raids, blackouts, and grief, Ukrainian engineers quietly resumed their mission. And in June 2025, after years of hardship, the Ruslan was reborn. On Friday, it safely completed its journey to Germany—rebuilt, modernized, and entirely Ukrainian in spirit.
It was the same massive aircraft that many in Kyiv glimpsed soaring above the city—an awe-inspiring and rare sight, given that Ukraine’s skies remain closed to civilian flights.
