This week, I did something that scared me a little… and moved me a lot.

I stood on stage at the Speak & Shine event as one of the 'Emerging Voices' and shared a story I’ve never spoken about publicly before.

It was a pretty big leap out of my comfort zone and one I’m so glad I took.

My talk was about the realities of being self-employed and thrown into the challenges of being a carer for my daughter, who lives with a chronic illness.

It’s not something I talk about often on here, but it’s a huge part of my life and the lives of over 3 million people in the UK who juggle paid work with full-time caring responsibilities.

It felt vulnerable.

It felt important.

And it felt like the right time to speak up.

I’m so grateful to Kier Adair and Gill McKay, two powerhouse women who made this event happen all from a lightbulb moment in the shower (if you know, you know!). You've created something so special, and I’m honoured to have been part of it.

The day was filled with connection, courage and community and the other women who spoke?
Just wow. 🔥
So much honesty, humour and heart. ❤️

If there’s one thing I took away from Speak & Shine, it’s this:

There is real power in sharing your story, especially the parts that feel the hardest to tell.

It’s not always easy to step into the spotlight, but sometimes the moments that stretch us the most are the ones that move us forward the furthest.

I’m proud I said yes.

I’m proud I stood up.

And I’m deeply grateful for the support, encouragement and space to speak honestly about a reality that so many of us quietly live through.

Thank you again to Kier and Gill for the vision, the energy, and the opportunity. You’ve started something truly special.❤

Yes, I know no one likes a bragger or one of those posts that start with ‘I’m thrilled to share…” BUT

✨ I’m absolutely thrilled to share that I’ve been named a finalist for Digital Carer of the Year at the Digital Women Awards 2025! ✨

This particular award means a lot to me, not just because it recognises women doing amazing things in the digital space, but because it celebrates those of us who are also carers, parents, and caregivers alongside running businesses, careers, and everything else life throws at us.

For me, this has been an especially personal journey.

Over the past four years, I’ve been caring for my daughter, who developed Long Covid at just 12 years old. It’s been completely life-changing for her and for me.

The reality of being a digital carer is the constant balancing act: managing hospital appointments, being present as a mum and carer, and navigating a career in digital marketing.

It's been a steep learning curve, to say the least.

But I’ve been incredibly grateful for the flexibility that comes with working in digital. It’s allowed me to keep doing work I love, helping businesses grow online while also being where I’m needed most at home.

Anything that shines a light on carers and raises awareness for young people like my daughter is so important. I’m proud to be part of this incredible group of finalists, all doing powerful work while juggling a lot behind the scenes.

💜 Thank you to Digital Women ® for creating an award that recognises carers as well as the great work that they are doing in the Digital space. Good luck to all the amazing women on the shortlist, see you in September for the awards!

I used to work in an industry where work-life balance didn’t get a second thought.

Flexible working was a no-go area and if you dared to raise the question your commitment was scrutinised.

I managed to make it work for a long time. I enjoyed the financial benefits but blocked out the negative impact it was having on my life, and mental and physical health.

Only when I had small kids did I realise that I couldn’t carry on and had to make a change.

I wanted to have a career that I enjoyed, to spend more time with my family and take better care of my overall health.

So I made the change.

I retrained in social media marketing and I’m happy to say that now things are different. I work remotely and have the flexibility I wanted and I wouldn’t change it for anything right now.

The things I am most grateful for now are that:

✅ I love the variety of work

✅ I can decide when I work

✅ The connections I've made

✅ I can choose who I work with

✅ I have more time for my family now

✅ I don't have the slog of the commute into central London

The ONLY thing I sometimes miss is the office banter which I can’t replicate working alone but that's a small price to pay for the benefits.

I'd love to hear what drove you to the point in your career or business to get to where you are today.

Is there anything that you wish you could change?
