The Backbone of Luzon — Sierra Madre

In a legendary tale, Sierra Madre was born from nature’s love for the Philippines.
She is the mountain goddess, a powerful maiden formed from the soil, stone, and roots of the forest. Her body is the mountain itself—strong, deep, and full of life. Her hair is the forest that dances with the wind, and her veins are the rivers that give life to the plains below.

Whenever a storm threatens the Philippines, Sierra Madre is the first to face the wind and rain. With her mighty arms made of earth and stone, she shields the lowlands and the people from the storm’s fury.
But in every battle, her form slowly fades—trees are cut down, the soil erodes, and her body is left wounded and scarred.

Yet even when weakened and in pain, she continues to stand tall, protecting her homeland.
She is the silent hero of nature—the tireless guardian of our nation against the storms.

"Let us not allow Sierra Madre to fight alone. Protect her, for she is the one protecting us."

LOOK: THE GUARDIANS OF LUZON — THE MOUNTAINS THAT STAND BETWEEN US AND THE STORM

Whenever powerful typhoons strike, three giants quietly stand guard against nature’s fury — the Sierra Madre, Caraballo Range, and the Cordilleras.
They are the true protectors of Luzon.

🌳 SIERRA MADRE — The Storm Shield
The longest mountain range in the Philippines. It is the first to face every storm—weakening the winds and rainfall before they reach the lowlands.

⛰️ CORDILLERAS — The Tallest Guardian
Lofty and steadfast, this is the backbone of Luzon. Its strength mirrors the resilience of the Filipino people amid every storm.

🌲 CARABALLO RANGE — The Silent Connector
Located in Nueva Vizcaya, it serves as the bridge linking Sierra Madre and the Cordilleras—uniting their strength and protection.

When struck, these mountains were the first to fight back. They weakened the winds, squeezed out the rain clouds, and absorbed the deluge—to shield us from greater destruction.

They are not just mountains — they are our stormbreakers, heroes, and protectors.
Now, it’s our turn to fight for them — to defend the Sierra Madre and the mountains of Luzon.

For parents like me...

On behalf of every co-parent here in the Philippines, please join me in petitioning for our children to have their classes online for the time being.

I am scared like everyone else... but we need to stay focused and vigilant.

DepEd Philippines can we do something like this to lessen our worries for our children—even just to ease a small part of our anxiety—knowing that they are with us during these difficult times?

This is not just for my own child but for all children. For the kids who go to their schools not knowing if their buildings are up to code or safe enough.

And the fear that they might suffer during emergencies while we’re not by their side.

There can be modular classes for those without internet access, and online classes for those who do have internet.
And while online classes are implemented, I hope the government mandates every school establishment to conduct inspections to check if there are areas that are no longer safe or not compliant with the building code—to prevent a greater disaster.

Remember the 1990 earthquake—thousands of people died in Baguio City because of old and non–earthquake-ready buildings that collapsed.

This is only temporary, just while things haven’t settled down yet—even for the time being, while there are still shakes being reported all over the Philippines.

MUST READ!!!

What To Do During an Earthquake?

🏠 If You Are Indoors (at Home, School, or Office) 🏠

1. Stay where you are! Do not run outside immediately — most injuries happen from falling objects or collapsing walls near exits.
2. DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON!
DROP to your hands and knees before the shaking knocks you down. COVER your head and neck under a sturdy table or desk. HOLD ON to the furniture until the shaking stops.
3. Stay away from windows, glass, and heavy furniture that might topple.
4. If in bed, stay there — protect your head with a pillow.
5. Do not use elevators. Use stairs after the shaking stops.
6. Turn off gas, electricity, and water valves once it’s safe to do so to prevent fires or leaks.

🏢 If You Are in a High-Rise Building 🏢

1. Move away from windows and shelves.
2. Do not rush to stairways or elevators while the shaking is happening.
3. Hold on to a stable object and brace yourself.
4. Once the shaking stops, evacuate calmly using the stairs.
5. Check for cracks or falling debris before exiting.
6. Proceed to the designated evacuation area.

🚗 If You Are in a Car🚗

1. Pull over safely and stop in an open area — away from bridges, trees, power lines, and tall buildings.
2. Stay inside the vehicle with your seatbelt fastened until the shaking stops.
3. Turn on hazard lights and listen to the radio for updates.
4. After the shaking stops, drive carefully — avoid damaged roads and fallen debris.
5. Do not block emergency routes.

🏬 If You Are in a Mall, Theater, or Public Place 🏬

1. Stay calm — do not rush to the exits.
2. Take cover under a sturdy table or counter.
3. Protect your head and neck from falling objects.
4. Follow staff or security instructions.
5. After shaking stops, exit slowly and avoid glass walls or shelves that may still fall.

🏫 If You Are in School 🏫

1. Duck, cover, and hold under your desk.
2. Face away from windows and glass.
3. Wait for your teacher’s signal before evacuating.
4. Proceed in an orderly line to your school’s open evacuation area.

🚆 If You Are in a Train (MRT/LRT or PNR) 🚆

1. Hold firmly to a handrail or support pole.
2. Stay inside the train while it’s moving.
3. Wait for the train to stop and follow staff instructions.
4. Do not panic or push others.
5. Avoid power lines or metal structures outside the train.

🏙️ If You Are Outdoors 🏕️

1. Move to an open area away from buildings, trees, lampposts, and power lines.
2. Stay alert for falling debris, glass, or signboards.
3. If near the coast, move to higher ground immediately — a tsunami may follow a strong quake.
4. Stay away from cliffs or slopes that may collapse.

🏥 If You Are in a Hospital 🏥

1. Stay with your patient if safe.
2. Protect your head and neck with your arms or pillow.
3. Avoid moving beds or equipment during the shaking.
4. Follow the instructions of medical staff or safety marshals.

✈️ If You Are in an Airport

1. Stay away from glass panels and heavy fixtures.
2. Do not rush to exits or escalators.
3. Follow airport emergency announcements and staff directions.
4. Wait for clearance before resuming travel.

‼️ After the Shaking Stops ‼️

1. Check yourself and others for injuries.
2.Evacuate calmly if necessary — do not use elevators.
3.Be alert for aftershocks.
4.Listen to official advisories (PHIVOLCS, NDRRMC, or local DRRMO).
5. Avoid coastal areas if a tsunami warning is issued.
6.Help others but stay safe.
7. Continue to pray for everyone's safety. 🙏
