Our father retired early due to medical condition, and my brother took on our father's role at a very young age, sacrificing his own goals and dreams to help support our family. He gave up everything he had for our family to survive during those times when we were young and unsure of what to do.
It has recently come to light that he has a physical anomaly, having been born without an external carotid artery. This left ECA is vital for supplying oxygen-rich blood to the organs and tissues in the head and neck, including the brain. A healthy individual typically has two external carotid arteries; he, however, has only one. This condition has been described by numerous doctors as an 'exceedingly rare condition, so rare that he was deemed 1:1 in the country.
How does this affect him? On an ordinary day, he experiences numbness on the left side of his body, or he feels as though his muscles are disconnected. On particularly challenging days, his extremities endure severe pain, and on the worst days, his carotid artery fails to provide sufficient oxygen to his brain, potentially leading to a transient ischemic attack (TIA) that could result in paralysis or, in the most critical cases, death. Recently, we have come to understand that his condition may also lead to vascular dementia.
To be transparent, we find ourselves in debt exceeding 1.5 million, but we are working diligently to recover. This situation is not solely due to my brother's extremely rare condition; it is also a result of various unfortunate occurrences that have affected our family, such as deaths, accidents, and hospitalizations. We have sought help from NGOs and charities, but it seems we have exhausted our chances.
My brother's health issues are both cardiovascular and related to the brain, which means that his neurologist appointments and neurological procedures are not included in any HMO coverage in the Philippines. We still plan to approach charitable organizations as we have done in the past, but this does take time.
