My boat trip with last June was one of the highlights of my Shetland trip - and also one of the best wildlife experiences I've ever had! Gannets everywhere 🩷

I tell you all about it in this month's episode, "Waiting for the sun"!

It was amazing getting up close with these birds while they're up in the air and shooting down into the sea to hunt.

But it was also sad to see how much fishing gear has got used in their nests. I even saw the lifeless bodies of entangled birds hanging off the cliffs... (3rd slide)

I thought hard about including this detail in the podcast story, but in the end, wildlife experiences are an important opportunity to learn about animals and the challenges they face. Too many wild animals are negatively impacted by human activity and unless we talk about that, it may never change.

Listen to now wherever you get your podcasts!

Have you ever been to a real Scottish cèilidh? 🎶

Most people hear cèilidh and think of dancing to a traditional cèilidh band, often held at weddings or Christmas parties.

But in it's simplest form, a cèilidh is simply a social gathering - and as we've heard from , music, songs and stories are traditionally a big part of social gatherings in Scotland.

Last year, I randomly bumped into such a gathering, a community cèilidh night, at the village hall in Corran near Glenelg. There were local musicians there playing traditional music, but overall the boundary between participants and spectators was very blurry. A Canadian spectator spontaneously sang a folk song from back home, and the fiddle player re-told a story she had heard at a primary school's storytelling contest.

Inspired, even I told a story I had read the night before. You can listen to it if you scroll back in our podcast feed and find the episode 'Over the Ratagan Pass' ❤️

📷 The photos are from my journey to Glenelg and Corran.

Listen to my chat with Alison to learn more about the importance of songs in Gaelic west coast culture!

What's the difference between farming and crofting? How can a croft sustain a family in the 21st century? And what happens when you scratch a bull's back? 🐮

Listen to this episode about crofting in South Uist featuring DJ and Lindsay from Long Island Retreats to find out:

https://www.wildforscotland.com/crofting-in-south-uist/

Spending a day with them to meet the sheep & cattle, watch wildlife in the machair, dig for fresh tatties and pat some Shetland ponies was a very wholesome experience - and I learnt so much. About crofting, about island life and about South Uist ❤️

I'm excited to share it with you!

Did you know that the Broch of Mousa is still almost as tall as it was when it was first built, over 2000 years ago? On a trip to the island with you can climb to the top and look up and down the coast 💙

But that's not the only impressive thing about Mousa. The broch and other stone ruins on the island are home to the UK's largest breeding colony of Storm Petrels - tony birds that return to their nests at night and make the most beautiful sound!

To hear them and find out more about this little island in Shetland, listen to my latest podcast episode now!

Two pics from recent getaways to connect with nature in the national park!

📷 1 is me swimming in Loch Lubnaig - one of the great swim spots my guest mentioned in our latest episode 🏊‍♀️

📷 2 is paddleboarding on Loch Ard, just a stone's throw from where we recorded our conversation 🌅

Have you listened yet? You may find inspiration for a short getaway to connect with nature too!

From fake castles to Roman toilet brushes 🤔 Here are some highlights from my trip to the Scottish Borders with Heritage and Archaeological Research Practice (HARP)- yet another region that is so often overlooked, but has so much to offer ⛏

My favourite moments:

🪩 Holding a REALLY OLD cannonball
🥪 Our delightful picnic lunch at Hume Castle: sandwiches & prosecco
📜 Doing ancestry research about my partner's family
🤴 An entertaining lesson on Henry VIII - yes, that's possible!
🪙 Witnessing the excavation of a 2,000-yr-old Roman coin
🐈‍⬛ Holding a Roman tile with cat paw prints (also 2,000 yrs old)
🟢 All you can eat Soor Plooms candy

And of course, there's all the laughs I shared with the other people on the trip, our guides Ian and Michelle and all the experts we met in the field.

You can hear about most of these things in my latest podcast episode 'Like an Open Book' - listen now wherever you get your podcasts!

PS: The HARP Archaeology tour is a great experience whether you always wanted to be an archaeologist, or just want a broader understanding of how to learn about Scottish history. Contact them to book!

To an archaeologist, the scenery is like an open book full of stories and imagination. Join me on an archaeology tour to the Scottish Borders with Michelle and Ian from Heritage and Archaeological Research Practice (or short, HARP)!

We'll explore ruined castles, read a kirkyard, dig for Roman treasures and uncover the mysteries of the past 🏰 ⛏ 🏺 🪙 🌿

We'll learn what archaeologists actually do, how they do it and most importantly we'll try some of the techniques ourselves.

And the best thing? You can join one of their tours too!

HARP Archaeology have just launched the dates of their brand-new archaeology tours and you'll get first dibs on booking your spot on this unique learning experience!

It isn't just our podcast birthday this week, it's also International Women's Day! We're celebrating both by sharing one of our favourite stories about the unsung heroes of Glasgow's Necropolis 🔥

'Flourish' tells the story of a guided women's heritage walk with volunteer guides from Glasgow Women's Library who researched the histories of women buried at this garden cemetery.

Look at these snowdrops 💙

There are many "stars" in our latest episode about Fife - icons, if you like - that's why it's called 'Icons of the Kingdom'! The snowdrops at Cambo Garden are just one of the highlights on this tour de force along Fife's coast.

There are Pictish caves and medieval queens, tour guides and farmers, foodies and waves - and of course, all the people I met along the way. This episode shows that Fife really is a great place to visit all year round.

Listen now wherever you find podcasts - or here: https://www.wildforscotland.com/icons-of-the-kingdom-a-winter-trip-to-fife/

PS: I've recently revisited Cambo Gardens to see more of the snowdrops - aren't they pretty?!

This episode was commissioned by Welcome to Fife ✌️
