The Universityโ€™s charity drive was a product of the collective efforts of UV students, faculty, staff, alumni, and private individuals.

In UV Toledo Campus, the College of Education Council of Leaders took part in the said activity through its donation drive last October 3. The proceeds went to the food packs that were distributed last Sunday.

โ€œSpeak now or forever hold your peace.โ€ This statement is often heard during wedding ceremonies, while for someโ€”Swiftiesโ€”they might have heard this on a Taylor Swift song titled โ€œSpeak Now.โ€ Regardless of origin, the message it brings transcends beyond its original context.

In the Philippines, it serves as a significant decision for Filipinos to make: "Should I speak against corruption or stay silent and hold my peace?" As for me, this has become a rhetorical choice in the face of corruption. What peace are you holding onto when society's rotting away from greed?

Recently, a 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit the northern part of Cebu, with less intense tremors felt in other areas, causing severe panic and suffering for many Cebuanos. Over thousands of aftershocks have been recorded, and there's no assurance that it will end any time soon. On the internet, a different type of aftershock has been feltโ€”misinformation and the spread of fake news. It spreads faster than verified facts, in the form of an AI-generated photo of a dried-up sea insinuating an incoming tsunami, rumors about the coming of โ€œthe Big One,โ€ and fabricated warnings designed to stir fear.

The issue does not stop there. Opportunists arise alongside this disaster. People pretend to be volunteers by asking for financial help through GCash accountsโ€”scamming generous citizens who are ready to helpโ€”only for the money to stay in their pockets. This very act reflects corruption in its rawest formโ€”using misinformation and exploiting vulnerability for personal gain. Yes, corruption does not stop in the government, it festers around us in our daily lives. It is not limited to politicians; anyone can commit the act.

Misinformation is deeply tied to corruption and thrives on silence, much like scammers who deceive people into giving money. The recent ghost fund controversy shows how lies and deception cloak greed. Billions of pesos meant for facilities and social aid were funneled into non-existent programs through false reports. These issues take a long time to surface because people choose silence. Now, calamitiesโ€”natural or notโ€”uncover these rotten problems under rug swept, exposing not just the physical cracks in the infrastructure but also the cracks in the system.

Staying silent may be peaceful but it is the number one ally of corruptionโ€”tolerating the oppressors and allowing injustice to thrive unchecked. When people remain quiet, they enable abuse and deny themselves the justice they deserve. On the other hand, speaking out stops this cycle. It is a constitutional right guaranteed to every Filipino under the freedom of speech and expression, giving voice to the people. It allows empowerment of the unheard and oppressed, all while shedding light on injustice.

In the context of corruption, silence is not innocent; it does not keep the peace but is a form of complicity and betrayalโ€”a facade that distracts people from the destruction of society caused by greed. To speak out is to forever hold the peace of no regrets, knowing you chose courage over silence.

It could have been one of the happiest nights of my life. I was writing materials for my upcoming teaching demonstration. I was alone in the house when suddenly, I felt a trembling sensation. The kitchen tools began to rattle, and the flowers seemed to sway. At the back of my mind, I thought, โ€œMaybe Iโ€™m just not feeling well because I havenโ€™t eaten yet.โ€ But the shakes grew stronger, and soon the trembling shook the whole of my being.

โ€œWhatโ€™s happening?โ€ I shouted loudly. No one heard me. Suddenly, everything went dark at exactly 10 PM. โ€œEarthquake!โ€ a neighbor shouted in panic. Everyone rushed out of their homes, crying and shaken. I fell to my knees, realizing that something was terribly wrong. I prayed. Trembles, shakes, panic attacksโ€”thatโ€™s all I could vividly feel in those abrupt seconds. Even the trees swayed, not out of joy, but because they too were caught in the tremor. People had no time to follow the drill of duck, cover, and holdโ€”it was instead: shake, rattle, and roll.

Minutes later, the power returned. Everyone immediately turned to social media for news updatesโ€”old churches had been damaged, houses collapsed, roads broken and blocked, and lives were lost.

Then I came across an inspiring post: a local teacher was calling for volunteers to help repack relief goods. That struck me deeply. Even in the darkest of times, a teacher was choosing to shine. Thousands responded, commenting that they would send food, used clothing, or anything that could provide immediate relief. Fellow teachers joined in too, helping to organize and bring hope to those in despair.

I was moved to tearsโ€”not because of fear or horror, but because of the resiliency of this teacher. She did not see herself as a victim; instead, she believed she could be someoneโ€™s savior. Like a hero straight out of a storybook, she rose above the chaos and became a source of strength, saving thousands of quake victims from hunger and displacement.

In the wake of the Northern Cebu earthquake, we are reminded that teachers are far more than educators. They are protectors, advocates, and silent heroes who step forward when their communities need them most. Looking back, it truly could have been one of the happiest nights of my lifeโ€”not because of my teaching preparations, but because I witnessed the unshakable spirit of a teacher who chose courage over fear and service over self. As we celebrate Teachersโ€™ Day, may we honor not only the lessons they teach within four walls, but also the hope, compassion, and strength they bring beyond them. For in every disaster, we find that the strongest pillars holding our childrenโ€”and our nationโ€”steady are our teachers.

โ€œThe stars are beautiful because of a flower that cannot be seen.โ€ This line from The Little Prince reflects the quiet, yet evident truth of a teacher. They are the overrated jack of all trades, and unrealized OG builders of societyโ€”weaving dreams, mentoring characters, and leading lives.

The role of a teacher does not stop at being a knowledge contributor. Given the nature of their job, they are required to become so much more. Teachers are a master of many roles becoming almost, if not, everything like being the second parents, a role model, a fan, a supporter, a nurse, a therapist, a healer, an artist, a career builder, and more. The integrity of this profession became the backbone of society because there is no other profession without the teaching profession.

Behind every realized and achieved dream is a teacher who gives courage to young minds who once knew nothing but curiosity. Consciously or unconsciously, they become dream weaversโ€”stitching the yarns of possibilities into visions, visions into potentials, potentials into hopes, and hopes into realities.

An ambition far greater than the four corners of the classroom can ignite in the simplest gesture of a teacher: explaining a concept, carefully choosing a story to tell, sharing a personal experience, providing words of encouragement, or simply showing upโ€”physically and emotionallyโ€”for their students. They plant the seed of ambition until it grows into a pursuit of passion, careers, and goals, bearing the fruit of success.

But the role of a teacher does not stop there. They don't just educate minds, they also shape characters and lead lives. Aside from cultivating the intellectual aspects of students, they also cultivate moral aspectsโ€”shaping hearts with values. They lead through example, consistency, humility, and their ability to inspire. A teacher's influence can change the trajectory of a studentโ€™s life. As such, they don't just correct papers but also paths. They don't just provide lectures but also life lessons. Like the flower that cannot be seen, their efforts and leadership are quietโ€”often unheard and unrecognizedโ€”but the results are loud, reflected in the progress of society.

The teaching profession is not easy. It demands a lot from a teacher, not just physically but in all aspects of their lives. From the internal to external struggles of having too much workloads, not enough support from the government, limited resources, financial problems, personal struggles, and the reality that they are not paid enough for the multiple roles they have played. Yet people tend to disregard this and cage their idea of a teaching profession as merely โ€œmaking lesson plansโ€ or โ€œsinging nursery rhymes.โ€ Regardless, teachers continueโ€”choosing to nurture, and choosing to believe in futures they may never fully witness.

This truth becomes evident in the life of a Visayanian teacher, rooted in a culture of resilience, discipline and excellence. For Jorenie Alfante, teaching is more than a profession; it is a mission and a vocation. He explains, โ€œthe true essence of being a teacher as a mentor is to help your students become a human beingโ€ฆ someone who is equipped with human values that allows him to treat other people around him betterโ€ฆ we donโ€™t want to produce educated monsters.โ€ His words reflect the type of students he wanted to produceโ€” a compassionate and responsible individual.

Alfante also embodies leadership, discipline, and achievement in his daily practiceโ€” reflecting the values of a true Visayanian. He shares, โ€œI see myself as an intellectual leader in the classroomโ€ฆ I make sure the students understand those concepts that they have to understand for their future careersโ€ฆ in terms of disciplineโ€ฆ I always see to it that the classroom is cleanโ€ฆ and also in terms of their academics I share insights to my students that will help them gain better scores.โ€ On achievement, he highlights, โ€œI set high standards for my students because I want them to conquer their own selves, to push themselves to their limitsโ€ฆ if they are able to push themselves to their limits, then thatโ€™s already a form of excellence.โ€

For Eliah Eden Antiga, passion fuels her motivation and dedication to teaching. She reveals, โ€œI am motivated everyday to teach despite of heavy responsibility because this is my passion ever sinceโ€ฆ itโ€™s really a mission because once you really put into your head that itโ€™s really a mission even if you have so many responsibilities to do everydayโ€ฆ as long as you love what you're doing you're tired feeling everyday..everything will just disappear because of the passion of yours.โ€ She embraces challenges with positivity, saying, โ€œpressure is naturalโ€ฆ the most important thing is how you dance with the pressureโ€ฆ every pressure is an opportunity for me to grow.โ€

Antiga's vision of the legacy that she wants her students to take with them is equally inspiring. She emphasizes, โ€œI just want them to be true to their passionโ€ฆ I just want to tell everyday my students that if you really love teaching then try to stand with thatโ€ฆ do not be the best teacher, not an intelligent teacher, but a teacher who knows how to listen, who knows how to sympathize everybody, to empathize everybody.โ€ For her, teaching is about fostering inclusion and care, ensuring โ€œnobody is left behind inside the classroomโ€ฆ everybody is part of the group.โ€

Truly, teachers are the silent flower in every person's achievement. Their guidance, patience , and dedication builds lives and shapes the society. Like the flower in The Little Prince, they may be unnoticed but their presence makes a big impact in peopleโ€™s lifeโ€”allowing them to shine like stars.

The newly elected club officers and Council of Leaders of the College of Education (CoEd) assumed their mandates for the Academic Year 2024-2025 after they took their oath on September 19 during the Installation of Officers and Oath-Taking Ceremony at the University of the Visayas Toledo City Campus (UVTCC) Rooftop.

The program was highlighted by the turnover of leadership from the outgoing president, Kimberly Obaรฑana, Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) in English student, to the newly elected president, Dexter Fernandez, also a BSED English student.

Fernandez shared that โ€œleadership can be both scary and beautiful at the same timeโ€ฆ but it is meant to influence, not just to hold a title.โ€

The ceremony, which also inducted the officers of Educatorsโ€™ Club, English Club, Nido de Ilustrados, and Socsociety, was graced by CoEd Dean Dr. Maria Fe A. Camaso, guest speaker Marlon Contado, club advisors, and faculty members.

The Toledo Lancer of the University of the Visayas Toledo City Campus (UVTCC) secured sixth place in the DICT Region 7 Hackathon: AI.Deas for Impact 2025 held on September 16-17 at the Kew Hotel and Island City Mall in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.

The team was composed of students from the College of Engineering, Technology and Architecture (CETA), namely Louise Margarette S. Ursal, Loui Jay R. Ortega, Maricon B. Dela Peรฑa, Kyle Gen S. Loremas, and Stevie Ray V. Rotulo. They were accompanied by their coach, Trisha Mae Eyas, and their program coordinator, Arvin D. Gutang.

The event was organized by DICT Region VII โ€“ Central Visayas โ€“ IIDB (SET PH) and the Analytics & AI Association of the Philippines, where each team representative from 35 different schools needed to secure a spot in the Top 10 to be able to participate in the workshop.

The finalists were: Code Blooded, Silliman University; AxIun, Bohol Island State University - Calape Campus; Andam, Bohol Island State University - Balilihan Campus; Ideon, Holy Name University; Innovara, Holy Name University; DBUG, Bohol Island State University - Main Campus; Toledo Lancer, University of the Visayas - Toledo City Campus; Culay, University of the Philippines - Cebu; B.AI, University of Bohol; and BinhiTech, Bohol Island State University - Calape Campus.

For coach Trisha Mae Eyas, one of her greatest challenges was providing guidance and motivation to the students who had limited time in preparing for the hackathon while balancing their academic responsibilities. โ€œI encouraged constant collaboration, open communication and regular brainstorming sessions,โ€ she shared. โ€œI also reminded them to focus not only on the technical side but also on how their project could create meaningful impact in the community.โ€

Eyas shared that she was proud and overwhelmed with joy upon knowing that the team placed sixth in the final round. โ€œPlacing sixth in the final round was a remarkable achievement. It showed that our students from UV Toledo can stand out and compete at a regional level against strong teams from other universities,โ€ she shared.

She further described the teamโ€™s victory as a remarkable milestone for UV Toledo. โ€œThis milestone helps strengthen our reputation as an institution that can nurture young innovators and produce students who are capable of competing in high-level events,โ€ she added, expressing her hope that this achievement will inspire the students to pursue further learning in AI and technology.

Meanwhile, Kyle Gen S. Loremas, one of the student representatives, shared that their project โ€œSALIWโ€ was developed in just a few days before the deadline. โ€œActually, dili jud mi kaayo prepared (Actually, we were not really that prepared) since six days prior to the event mi kakita sa post (since we only saw the post six days prior to the event) from the DICT Region 7,โ€ he admitted. โ€œWe submitted our innovative solution just the night before the deadline, it is an AI-powered system called SALIW, a Smart Health Assistant for Community Level Public Health Management in the Philippines,โ€ he shared.

Reflecting on the achievement, Loremas said, โ€œPlacing sixth out of ten teams at the DICT Region 7 Hackathon: AI.Deas for Impact 2025 is a big deal to me. It's a huge achievement because it shows that even though we're a new team, makig-compete na mi kauban ang mga brilliant minds (we can already compete alongside brilliant minds). This isn't just about winning, but about the journey and the lessons we learned. I hope this inspires more students to explore AI, join hackathons, and use their skills to make a real difference. Let's show everyone that ang UV Toledo kaya pud makig-sabay (UV Toledo can also keep up).โ€
