The 6.5L Detroit Diesel engine was introduced in 1992 as the new and improved version of the 6.2L Diesel engine. Detroit Diesel designed the engine for General Motors, and it was the second collaboration between the pair, following the earlier 6.2L Detroit Diesel engine. While most of the 6.5L engines were sold with a turbocharger for improved performance, some naturally aspirated versions were also made. The motor also featured an emission system and delivered stellar fuel economy despite the use of a turbocharger.

The engine application wasn’t limited to only pickup trucks but was extended to vans and SUVs. Between 1992 and 2002, the engine was used in several vehicles, including:

• Chevrolet Blazer
• Chevrolet Tahoe
• Chevrolet K Series (1500, 2500, & 3500)
• Chevrolet C-3500HD
• Chevrolet Suburban
• Chevrolet C/K
• Chevrolet Vans
• GMC Yukon
• GMC Suburban
• GMC C/K
• GMC C-3500HD
• GMC Vans
• Holden Suburban
• AM General Hummer H1
• AM General HMMWV
