Atiq Ahmed, the 'gangster politician' who was killed live in front of TV cameras in India last month, was seen as a symbol of fear and terror in his life.
As soon as the chapter of the life of Atiq Ahmed, who was brutally murdered, came to an end, the four-decade reign of terror in the city of Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh also came to an end.
Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, was once known for its rich culture in the past.
To uncover the mysteries of Atiq Ahmed's tumultuous life, BBC Correspondent Sutak Biswas from New Delhi and Vikas Pandey from Prayag Raj investigate and find out what were the circumstances that led Atiq Ahmed to become a criminal and a politician. The borders between were erased.
It was a foggy morning in January 2005 when Raju Pal, a recently elected legislator, was traveling in the northern Indian city of Prayagraj when two vehicles suddenly sped up and stopped dangerously in front of him. Gone.
More than half a dozen men jumped out and started firing indiscriminately at Raju Pal's Toyota SUV. After firing several shots from their guns, they escaped from there.
Immediately after the incident, the passers-by pulled out the bleeding Rajupal from the car and shifted him to another vehicle to take him to the hospital.
