Democrats and Republicans failed to reach a Government funding agreement and as of October 1, 2025, the United States Federal Government has entered a partial shutdown.
Congress failed to pass a funding bill by the midnight deadline on September 30. This impasse stems from partisan disagreements over spending priorities, with Republicans pushing for cuts to programs like Medicaid and Democrats demanding protections for health care & social services.
President Donald Trump and congressional leaders met at the White House on September 29th but made no breakthrough, with Vice President JD Vance stating the shut down was likely.
The Senate vote on a Republican-backed continuing resolution (CR) fell short, receiving only 55 of the 60 needed votes. The shutdown isn't total, as essential services like national security, air traffic control, and emergency response will continue.
The shutdown affects about 2 million federal workers, with roughly 800,000 furloughed, which means they'll receive retroactive pay once the political disagreement has been resolved.
