Creating the Akari character for the "Tokusatsu Filmmaking by Takeshi Yagi" was a an experimental adventure – what kind of fighting technology would extraterrestrial beings have designed in conjunction with classical Greek artists? Frank was amazing working with Yagi and the Naro team to create her – the first giant Tokusatsu heroine to save the city from a giant Kaiju monster!

And martial arts fighter and actress Kanon Miyahara stepped up to play Akari with power and style!

PART 2 of of the course is now LIVE on our site – teaching how a director works with the teams central to making tokusatsu films by actually showing you the creation process of a tokusatsu we call AKARI (recently screened as a short film at Fantasia International Film Festival . From concept and story through character design, model building, miniature set construction, shooting and post-production, this gives a great birdseye and behind-the-scenes look at how things work in the genre that brought the world everything from Godzilla to Ultraman – Yagi himself is the director of some of the most popular Ultraman series and films!

The use of extraordinary, vivid color was key in our AKARI film, created by Ultraman director Takeshi Yagi for his upcoming course on "tokusatsu," the Japanese tradition of practical effects filmmaking, usually with heroes battling giant monsters.

The evolving colors were Inspired by our art consultant Mad Dog Jones and translated into cinematic reality on set by our cinematographer Alexandre Bartholo with help from Japanese film legends Marbling Fine Arts' set and costume design, motion effects legend Muraishi Yoshinori, the changing colors of the film give the battle between kaiju (giant monster) Pythagodon and our heroine Akari (the first female lead to battle a monster in tokusatsu history!) a deeper meaning as the action progresses.

Yagi's course goes live 7/22, just as AKARI screens at Fantasia International Film Festival – Le groupe, launching with 110 minutes in 9 video sessions as Part 1, which covers the history of the genre.

Part 2 (coming in August) covers the making of this absorbingly colorful film.

TOKUSATSU! The style of filmmaking that brought the world everything from Godzilla to Ultraman to Power Rangers – we are offering a new course with ULTRAMAN series director Takeshi Yagi. And to teach tokusatsu filmmaking, we worked with Yagi to create an original tokusatsu film: AKARI!
