September 13, 2025…Songs that went to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart in 1975

This is the song was #1 on this date in 1975.

Back on April 26th, the song at #1 on the Hot 100 Pop chart was…“(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song”, by B.J. Thomas.

At the time, in my accompanying story, I wrote the following:

“April 26, 2025…Songs that went to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart in 1975
This is the song was #1 on this date in 1975.
This song was at #1 on the Hot 100 Pop chart this week…BUT…there’s more to tell about it!
It also went to #1 a few weeks earlier on the Adult Easy-Listening chart!!
AND…it goes to #1 on the Country Music chart a few weeks from now!!!
It’s a rare song that pulls off that trifecta!
BUT…it’s not the only time this year it will happen…look for it to happen again…and again…not just once more…but twice more!
I believe that is a record…three different songs in the same year…hit #1 on ALL THREE MAJOR Billboard charts!
There will be more about this topic when it happens with the other two songs later this year!”

Wellllll…the second song to go to #1 on ALL THREE charts is this featured song!

{{Hint, Hint…the third song to do this, is coming up in this weekly Series VERY SOON!!}}

It was at #1 on the Adult chart for the week ending August 2nd.

This week, it is at #1 on the Hot 100 Pop chart for the second week in-a-row.

AND…it was #1 for 2 weeks on the Country chart, but last week it fell to #2 as Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn moved into the #1 spot with their song called “Feelings”.

BUT…this week, this featured song returns the favor, and bumps Conway & Loretta back out of #1, and this featured song moves back into the #1 spot for now the third week…making it the only song in 1975 to be at #1 on BOTH the Hot 100 Pop chart AND the Country Music chart in the same exact week!!

This video is from the 1975 Country Music Association (CMA) Awards show.

So, 50 years ago tonight, this was the #1 song on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart…

September 13, 2025…Songs that went to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart in 1975

This featured song is the fourth “EXTRA” tonight…remember, an “EXTRA” is a song that never reached #1 at any time on the Hot 100 Pop chart!

With the exception of the previous featured song…this week’s featured songs all have a Country connection!

While this song was never a hit on the Country chart…it has been performed in-concert by many different Country artists over the years.

And even this original recording has some definite Country sounds to it!

Somehow, this song only got as high as #34 on the Hot 100 Pop chart.

It entered the chart last week at #79…and moved up this week to #68.

Back in 1977, this group was the opening act at one of my first-ever concerts…appearing in my hometown.

After these guys…the next band was Pure Prairie League with their hit song “Amie”!

And the headliner was Ozark Mountain Daredevils singing “If You Wanna Get To Heaven (You Got To Raise A Little Hell)”…and “Jackie Blue”.

It was a night of “Southern-Rock”…”Country-Rock”!!!

In my opinion, this featured song and band opened the door for Marshall Tucker Band, and their hit “Heard It In A Love Song”.

This video is a “hybrid”…combining the original studio audio recording with the “live” visual on-stage.

Here is the group called Outlaws performing “There Goes Another Love Song”:

September 13, 2025…Songs that went to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart in 1975

This featured song is the third “EXTRA” tonight…remember, an “EXTRA” is a song that never reached #1 at any time on the Hot 100 Pop chart!

So, I just featured a Country-Pop song that was being debated in my mind whether or not to feature it because of the lyrics.

And here I am featuring a Reggae-Pop song that I debated in my mind whether or not to feature because the lyrics subject is about a person that was “controversial”…and “divisive”…for many reasons!

In the 1970’s, I was on the side of those who did not like the person talked about in this song…I didn’t like what he said…I didn’t like what he stood for.

That was when I was a teenager.

Many years later…I’m not sure I would say “I liked him”…but I grew to have a little more respect for him…as a boxer, and as a person who had his own set of principles!

And whether or not I agreed with those principles, I respected that he didn’t back down from what he believed…and he never gave in to public opinion!

This week, this song is at #21 on the Hot 100 Pop chart…it’s peak position.

BUT…this is a song that hung around the chart for a long time…27 weeks!

That lengthy chart-run is usually only seen by songs that get at least into the “Top 10”…and quite often, make it to #1 for a few weeks.

This video shows highlights of him in action in the boxing ring.

This is Johnny Wakelin & The Kinshasa Band singing “Black Superman—Muhammad Ali”:

This featured song is the second “EXTRA”…and remember, the second “EXTRA” is from the Country Music chart.

This song…wellllll…I debated featuring it…let me explain…

I love the melody!!

BUT…the lyrics are about a topic I don’t agree with!

It’s about “picking up a stranger”…and going to a motel for a “one-night-stand”!

I have never done that in my life…and I don’t want to seem like I am condoning it.

But…I believe THAT is the lesson here…DON’T DO THIS!

It is presented in a way…lyrically…that actually is a little funny in some of the lines.

Anyway…on this week in 1975…it was at it’s peak position on the Country Music chart…at #11.

And on the Hot 100 Pop chart this week, it was also at it’s peak position there…at #14.

This is the Amazing Rhythm Aces singing “Third Rate Romance”:

September 13, 2025…Songs that went to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart in 1975

This featured song is the first “EXTRA” tonight…remember, an “EXTRA” is a song that never reached #1 at any time on the Hot 100 Pop chart!

This featured song is hitting the Hot 100 Pop chart for the first time this week…entering the chart at #79.

It will eventually make it to a peak position of #2…it got stuck there for 2 weeks behind an Elton John song, which you’ll find out which one when we get to early-November!

Prior to this single…this band’s previous two singles both made it to #1 on the Hot 100 Pop chart…”Best Of My Love”…and “One Of These Nights”…but this song couldn’t quite make it three #1 songs in-a-row for this group.

On the Adult Easy-Listening chart…this song peaked at #3 for two weeks.

And on the Country Music chart…this song peaked at #8.

They only had 6 singles make the Country chart…and this was by far their best-charting single there.

This is a “live” video…from 1977…it shows how this band made it their intention to have their “live” performances sound as close as possible to the real studio recordings…and I like that a lot when an artist does that!

Oh, by the way…many people insist on calling this band “The Eagles”…and the band insists they are simply “Eagles”…no “the” in front of it!

This is the band called Eagles performing “Lyin' Eyes”:

September 13, 2025…50th Anniversary “Milestone” Series for “I’m Sorry” from John Denver

This “Milestone” for this week…it’s the week that “I’m Sorry” jumps into the “Top 10”…going from #15 last week…to #8 this week…a pretty significant jump, when it’s that high up in the chart already!

Now, I want to talk about something most people don’t know…….
Some people listened to the “Casey Kasem American Top 40 Countdown” on the radio years ago…and I’m sure heard the ranking each week as this song was on the radio.

And some of you may have heard the “Special Countdown” in late-December of 1975…the “Year-End Countdown of the Top 100 Charting Songs for 1975”.

And some of you have probably wondered how is it possible that “I’m Sorry” was ranked waaaaaay down at #77 for the entire year, when it went to #1, and also spent 5 weeks at #2, and 8 total weeks inside the “Top 4”.

Sooooo…here’s the reason…Casey Kasem’s “Year-End Countdowns” were based on the Billboard Year-End Rankings…and they tabulate the charts from November 1st of the previous year, to October 31st of the current year…they had to cut-off then, so they had time to go through all the weeks, for all the songs…tabulate the points for each week’s chart position…and rank them in order…and then print the results in the year-end issue of Billboard magazine…which was actually sent to the printer in early-December, so it could be printed, and then distributed to stores for sale by the end of December!

“I’m Sorry” was still at #2 on the chart when the cut-off occurred on October 31st…and it was still on the chart until December 13th…so 7 weeks of it’s charting were not tabulated into the year-end rankings!

Welllllll…here’s where I come in…to the rescue…hahahaha!

I have a bunch of books about the various Billboard charts…Hot 100 Pop…Country…Adult Easy-Listening…Soul…Albums...etc.

And I have a particular book that ranks, based on Billboard…BUT takes a retro look at the reality of chart performance overall.

Let me explain…

This book looks at each song’s entire chart time…from the first week it hit the chart…until the last week it drops off the chart!

And it then ranks the songs based on the entirety of it’s chart-run.

With this method, it more accurately shows how popular a song was in a particular year!

And where does “I’m Sorry” rank in this method?
I though you’d never ask…hahahaha!

For the entire year of 1975…”I’m Sorry” by John Denver ranks at #5!!!!!

OH…AND…this song was totally responsible for the album turning into a huge seller IMMEDIATELY!!

The first week the album “Windsong” was released…it’s very first week on the U.S. Billboard “Top 200 Albums” chart…it entered at #2…it stayed at #2 the following week…then it knocked Pink Floyd’s album out of the #1 spot the third week “Windsong” was on the chart!

So many people had obviously bought the 45-vinyl single of “I’m Sorry” because it hit #1 the week before the “Windsong” album hit the chart…many fans couldn’t wait for the album, so they bought the single!

BUT…when the album was released, those same fans just HAD TO HAVE the album toooooo!!!

They wanted to hear the other songs that John had written and recorded on there!

AND…fans were not disappointed by the overall album…it is consistently named as one of John Denver’s “Top 10” favorite albums…some fans rank it inside their “Top 5”…and some fans say it’s their absolute favorite album from him!

This video I’ve chosen…it features the original studio recording (I used a “live” video performance in the last “Milestone” in this Series)…it also has lyrics on-screen…and it has some beautiful scenery (although there’s a couple of odd quick clips, the video is mostly really beautiful.)

Here is John Denver singing “I’m Sorry”:

September 14, 2025

Today is a special day in our family.

It is the birthday of the youngest grandchild of this family…welllll…he held that title for a few years…he’s now the second-youngest grandchild of this family!

Aiden turns 6 years old today!

He is in 1st grade this year!

This past Spring-time, he played in his first season of T-ball baseball…and he hit the ball the furthest on his team…to the outfield every time!

Unfortunately, in T-ball, every hit is the same…you stop at first base only…hahahaha!

He also plays basketball, soccer, and roller hockey.

And he loves running!

In July, he ran a race that he’s done a few years now. This time, he finished in second place for a quarter-mile race…second place out of about 250 runners aged 6 years and younger!

It’s funny watching him run, because he’s so focused…and because he doesn’t run with his hands closed like a fist, pumping forward and back…instead, he has all his fingers pointing straight forward…like his hands are slicing through the air, like a sprint-runner going faster!

This featured song was released in 2009…but somehow, Aiden discovered it this year…I suspect it’s the chorus that he knows and likes!

Happy 6th Birthday to Aiden!

September 6, 2025…Songs that went to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart in 1975

This is the song was #1 on this date in 1975.

This song was the #1 song on the Country Music chart the past two weeks, and drops to #2 on that chart this week…but it moves into the #1 spot on the Hot 100 Pop chart this week!

On the Hot 100 Pop chart, this featured song took a few big jumps in previous weeks, and also took some tiny baby steps…

It went from #14 to #7…making it seem like it was heading for the top spot!

Welllll…it was…eventually…hahaha!

Here’s what it did after that big jump into the “Top 10”…

It went from #7 to #6 to #5 to #3, and finally this week to #1…it’s 15th week on the chart…close to tying the all-time record of 18 weeks to get to #1…set earlier this year in March by “My Eyes Adored You” by Frankie Valli, and tied in May by “Before The Next Teardrop Falls” by Freddy Fender.

This is a “live” video from the TV show called “The Midnight Special”.

So, 50 years ago tonight, this was the #1 song on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart…

September 6, 2025…Songs that went to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart in 1975

This featured song is the fourth “EXTRA” tonight…remember, an “EXTRA” is a song that never reached #1 at any time on the Hot 100 Pop chart!

This featured song has been recorded by so many artists of various genres over the decades…from the 1950’s to today!

In 1975, this band gave it a try too!

And they didn’t do very well on the charts with it…although it hit all three major Billboard charts!

On the Country Music chart…it peaked at #79.

On the Adult Easy-Listening chart…it made it up to #30.

And on the Hot 100 Pop chart…it reached #66.

On the first two charts, it entered on July 12th…but it just entered the Hot 100 Pop chart last week…and it’s already dropped off the other two charts by this week!

On the Hot 100 Pop chart, this group had a bunch of minor hits in the 1970’s…their best-charting single went to #9…”Mr. Bojangles”.

On the Country chart…they became a major success story in the 1980’s!

Just counting that decade…they had 22 hit singles on the Country Music chart…all but three of them made the “Top 40”.

16 of those hits reached inside the “Top 10”…and 11 made the “Top 5”…with 3 going all the way to #1.

This is The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band singing “(All I Have To Do Is) Dream”:

Written by Boudleaux Bryant. Released July 1975 from the album 'Dream & Dirt Silver and Gold', it reached #79 Country #66 Hot 100 #30 AC.

September 6, 2025…Songs that went to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart in 1975

This featured song is the third “EXTRA” tonight…remember, an “EXTRA” is a song that never reached #1 at any time on the Hot 100 Pop chart!

Soooo…the previous song was a duet…Conway Twitty with his usual duet partner, Loretta Lynn…and it was at #1.

Welllll…here is Conway Twitty AGAIN…with a different duet partner…his daughter Joni.

This song just hit the Country Music chart for the first time three weeks ago…this week, it moves up to #27…on it’s way to a peak position of #4.

The song was recorded when Joni was only 16 years old.

It was the only radio single that featured Joni in a prominent vocal duet with her father…although she sang back-up vocal for his previous single “Touch The Hand” which went to #1 on the Country Music chart for 2 weeks back in July.

This is a “live” video with father and daughter on-stage together.

September 6, 2025…Songs that went to #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Pop chart in 1975

This featured song is the second “EXTRA”…and remember, the second “EXTRA” is from the Country Music chart.

First…a little odd side-note…in this week’s Country Music “Top 40”…there are three songs in-a-row… #35, #36, #37…all in their first week in the “Top 40”…and all will be going to the #1 spot in back-to-back-to-back weeks in November…so they will be featured then!!!

This song is #1 this week on the Country Music chart.

These two artists were both solo singers, with extremely successful careers!!

BUT…they also recorded a lot of duets together…and the chart success of those duet recordings apart from their solo careers is also quite successful.

Many artists wish they had a charting career that was as successful as only the duets from these two singers……..

They had 14 hit duets on the Country Music charts…ALL 14 of them reached inside the “Top 10”…9 of them got into the “Top 5”…and 5 of those duet recordings went all the way to #1…including this featured song!

This is Loretta Lynn & Conway Twitty singing “Feelings”:

This featured song is the first “EXTRA” tonight…remember, an “EXTRA” is a song that never reached #1 at any time on the Hot 100 Pop chart!

This featured song is at #21 this week on the Hot 100 Pop chart…in a couple weeks, it will reach it’s peak position of #17.

BUT…on the Adult Easy-Listening chart, this song is at #1 this week!

In fact, it’s the 4th song to go to #1 on that chart, out of 6 in-a-row…and out of 15 total #1 hits they had on that chart…they were the most successful artist on the Adult chart in the entire 1970’s decade!

And it’s their third #1 song on the Adult chart in 1975!!!
