RIP to the legendary Borris Spassky

RIP Boris Vasilievich Spassky

The 10th World Champion Boris Spassky has passed away at the age of 88.

Spassky was considered a chess prodigy. He attained the Grandmaster title at the age of 18 and made his debut in the Candidates Tournament (Amsterdam, 1956) at 19.

After defeating Keres (1965), Geller (1965), and Tal (1965) in Candidates matches, he earned the right to challenge Petrosian but lost the title match (Moscow, 1966). Spassky made it all the way up again in the next cycle and won the crown in his second match against the ninth world champion.

Spassky played seven times for the Soviet Olympiad team (1962–1978). In 1976, Spassky immigrated to France; he competed for France in three more Olympiads (1984–1988).

New GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS Title: Over seven million chess games played in one day!🏆

🌟 On International Chess Day, July 20, a monumental achievement was realized as we set the new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the most chess games played in 24 hours, both online and over the board.

🌟 The goal was to surpass one million games, but an incredible 7,284,970 were played! 🌍

109 chess federations participated, with 🇱🇰 Sri Lanka (9,848 games), 🇮🇳 India (9,397 games), and 🇰🇿 Kazakhstan (8,759 games) leading the way. 🇱🇰 Sri Lanka and 🇮🇳 India hosted the most tournaments (78 each), followed by 🇨🇳 China (45).

♟️ To validate the record, all games had to be played within 24 hours as part of the FIDE 100 Guinness World Records Attempt, with a minimum time control of 3+2.

🌐 Over 75,000 games were over-the-board, while the rest were online across five platforms: Chess.com (including ChessKids), Lichess.org, FIDE Online Arena, SimpleChess, The Chess Alliance, and Zhisai. Chess.com contributed over six million games!
