SLP & Play-To-Earn

SLP has been live for 614 days now. This means Play to earn is almost 2 years old!

It's been an amazing journey and there's been a lot to learn.

SLP is a utility token/potion in the Axie ecosystem. It's used to breed Axies.

Ideally, the daily amount of SLP created through play and burned through breeding would be close to balanced.

Harmony between the supply and demand side of the economy.

With variable short-term growth rates and cyclical adoption, things can get out of whack.

We've gone through times of low burn/low minting as well as times of high burn/high minting and everything in between!

With the huge increase in growth with Ronin, we experienced a period where the amount of SLP burned through breeding exceeded the amount minted.

This happens when a massive rush of entrants join the ecosystem and hadn't ramped up production by playing yet.

Once these players were onboarded and started earning, the amount minted started to increase relative to the burn rate. The burn rate has still been high in absolute terms but has been lagging as a percentage of the minting rate recently.

Part of the reason for this has also been the Skyrocketing AXS price. AXS, our governance token, became part of the breeding fee with the shift to Ronin.

We increased the AXS portion of the breeding fee. As AXS demand increased, so did price and its relative proportion.

I do think that AXS as a percentage of the breeding fee has gotten too high and that the amount of SLP burned relative to minting is a bit high.

The average amount of SLP burned as a percentage of the daily issuance is 58% and we've been a bit lower than this recently.

This can be addressed by:

- decreasing AXS portion of the breeding fee (again)
- Increasing SLP portion of the breeding fee (again)
- Decreasing SLP issuance (again)
- Adding new sources of demand for Axies (inducing more SLP burn)

Do I think there's an emergency supply overflow of SLP right now? No.

But I do think it's something to watch and I find it helpful to share our thinking around this topic.

Long term, introducing new features that increase our growth trajectory is the easiest way of ensuring the supply and demand sides of the in-game economy are balanced.

Some might think this is a danger to the system. We are reliant on growth!

Actually, this is a positive aspect of the system: everyone wants Axie to grow and helps to make it happen.

This is how our community absorbs, internalizes, and projects a growth mindset to the outside world.

This is not unique to Axie, it also applies to Crypto in general.

We also have ~4 B USD of AXS in the play-to-earn allocation which will reduce the ecosystem's reliance on SLP as their source of earning long-term.

We will ramp up the distribution of AXS as our gameplay gets more advanced. We are still in Alpha with a very basic product!

The Last Stand

We know for a fact that there is a positive correlation between Morale and Last Stand chance – the higher the Axie’s morale, the higher the chance of Last Stand being activated. We also know that your Axie will never enter Last Stand when you need it most, but believe it or not, this is actually more than just a game of chance.

As it turns out, there is a mathematical way to determine if your Axie will enter the Last Stand:

If (Final Blow - Remaining HP) < (Remaining HP x Morale/100) → Axie enters Last Stand

Based on the photos, you would want to get opponent Axie down to as little remaining HP as possible before dealing the final blow, minimizing the chances of it entering the Last Stand.

So no more finger-crossings for Last Stand miracles, only cold, hard factual math!

Key points

- Axie is a new type of game that rewards players for the time and effort they spend both playing the game and growing the ecosystem.

- Axie has a 100% player-owned, real money economy. Rather than selling game items or copies, the developers of the game focus on growing the player-to-player economy and take small fees to monetize. Axies are created by players using in-game resources (SLP & AXS) and sold to new/other players. You can think of Axie as a nation with a real economy. The holders of the AXS token are the government that receives tax revenues. The inventors/builders of the game, Sky Mavis, hold ~20% of all AXS tokens.

- Game resources and items are tokenized, meaning they can be sold to anyone, anywhere on open peer-to-peer markets.

Axie population growth is a major factor within the Axie ecosystem. At any given moment, there exists some ideal inflation rate that allows us to grow to our maximum potential. Too slow and Axie prices are too high for everyday people to join; especially competitive Axies. Too fast and you get unhealthy inflation.

Long term Axie population management relies on:

- Adding additional utility to Axies through new experiences such as land, mini-games. This also adds utility to Axies beyond their effectiveness in fleeting metas.

- Adding vertical, rather than purely horizontal progression. Right now in order to progress the main path that people take is by expanding the size of their collection. This dynamic is not optimal long term. In the long run, there will be upgrades to both Axies AND Land that will require crafting ingredients. Axies themselves may be “released” to obtain these crafting ingredients. This creates a long-term supply sink to the Axie population. Axie progression is coming in the future, and it promises to create a much stronger bond between trainers and the Axies they choose to upgrade.

- Soulbound Axies, aka non-transferable Axies, that are competitive in the arena will allow anyone to compete and have fun. Earning potential for these soul-bound Axies should be zero or close to zero; meaning that of course demand will remain for strong “real” battle Axies. Also keep in mind that demand for Axies is ultimately what also drives demand for SLP (and AXS), so creating more reasons to own Axies and making it easier for us to grow are important in a healthy economy.
