Darío manifiesta preferencia por el tema americano, pero su obra tiene mucho de poesía ocasional, como su Salutación al Águila. Y vendrá el rápido derrumbe físico del gran artista que lanzará su más alto acento metafísico en "Lo Fatal", donde se observa un gran cambio: junto a lo pagano o lo erótico, aparecen tonos graves, inquietud, amargura.
