Haven is home safe tucked in bed. I often wonder what makes a human being resilient. I mean I have met some real life hero’s in my life in the Army overseas. Soldiers risking life and limb for our freedoms.
However, when I look at my son and other complex medical children like him, I can’t help but think about how they do it. How do they endure procedures after procedures, diagnosis after diagnosis, therapy after therapy and pokes after pokes - yet somehow still they find the gift of life so amazing. Often you see my son smiling despite having just screamed and crying out in pain minutes before. It’s his special gift, I think. To not hold on to the pain; rather to choose joy no matter the circumstances.
He takes whatever life throws at him and miracle after miracle he proves life is worth fighting for. It such a privilege to watch his process of absorbing life and seeing his progress as he grows. It’s hard to fathom so many thought he wouldn’t be here. That odds were against him. Yet despite the tolls he has had to pay to have this life, I think he tells us everyday pain only tells us that we are alive. That every day is opportunity to experience love and life and new things in different perspectives.
It’s what unites us all in the hardest and most devided of times. Haven teaches us if a baby to six year old can survive and thrive against the odds - so can we all. Just believe. Wake up everyday like it’s that new baby day we won’t always have. Take a moment to say good morning to the trees and good night to the moon. Watch bees as they go from flower to flower - just don’t touch them. After all as Haven says, “Bees are our friends.” And if you feel pain don’t be afraid to cry and to shout and to verbalize the moment, to let it all out so the next breath can be a new moment of endless possibilities just waiting for you to embrace them. And finally remember to rest and reset so you can have the energy to do it all over again tomorrow.
What makes my son Haven so resilient? I truely believe his life is a testimony. A testimony of humanity in its most vulnerable moments to its most precious minutes. A story no matter your age we can all relate to and hopefully see that same strength is within us all. That faith is what we have in those moments where we can’t see it the most. And hope for us all still exists - we just have to believe…
