Saints Thirunaavukkarasar & Thirugnana Sambandhar were among the most revered 4 Naayanmaars among 63. They often made pilgrimages together and wrote several devotional songs in praise of Lord Shiva at many Shiva shrines. Once, while they were staying in a place called Thirumaraikkaadu(Current day Vedhaaranyam), the Empress Mangaiyarkarasi of the Pandiya Kingdom requested him to visit the city of Madurai & combat the spread of Jainism with his discourses and songs on Shiva. While he was leaving to Madurai, Thirunaavukkarasar told him that the planetary positions are not favorable enough to take up the journey and requested him to postpone the journey.
Thirugnana Sambandhar told him that people who are constantly immersed in the thoughts of Lord Shiva can never be afffected by planets. On top of it, he wrote Kolaru Padhigam(Padhigam is a collection of 10 stanzas) meditating on the planets and made a successful journey. That is how Kolaru Padhigam came into existence.
Even during current days, reciting, listening or singing these verses is believed to ward off the harmful effects that may be caused by the planetary positions.

அறுபத்தி மூன்று நாயன்மார்களுள் முதன்மை நால்வர்களுள் இருவரான மாணிக்கவாசகரும் திருஞான சம்பந்தரும் பல்வேறு சிவத்தலங்களுக்கு ஒன்றாகவே பயணம் மேற்கொண்டு தமது தமிழ்ப் பாடல்களைப் பாடி இறைத்தொண்டு செய்துகொண்டிருந்த வேளையில் ஒருநாள், பாண்டிய பேரரசியான மங்கையர்க்கரசியிடமிருந்து திருஞானசம்பந்தருக்கு அழைப்பு வந்தது. மதுரை மாநகருக்கு வந்து, சமணச் சமயத்தைத் தழுவி வரும் மக்களிடையே சைவச் சித்தாந்தங்களைத் தம்முடைய பாடல்கள் மூலமாக பரப்புரைக்க வேண்டுமாறு அரசியார் கோரிக்கை வைத்திருந்தார். அதனை ஏற்று, அவர் பயண ஆயத்தங்களை மேற்கொண்டிருந்த வேளையில், திருநாவுக்கரசர், கோள்களின் அமைப்புகள் ஞானசம்பந்தரின் பயணத்திற்கு உகந்ததாக இல்லை என்று பயணத்தை ஒத்திப்போடச் சொன்னார். ஆனால் திருஞானசம்பந்தரோ, சிவனையே எண்ணி நாள்தோறும் தியானிக்கும் அடியார்களை, கோள்களில் அமைப்பு எதுவும் செய்யாது, மாறாக நன்மையை மட்டுமே நல்கும் என்று கூறியதோடல்லாமல், 10 பாடல்களை உடனே கோள்களைப் பற்றி புனைந்தார். பின்னர் வெற்றிகரமாக பயணத்தை மேற்கொண்டார். அதுவே இந்த கோளறு பதிகமாகும்
இன்றைய காலகட்டத்திலும், முக்கிய காரியங்களுக்காக பயணம் மேற்கொள்ளும்போதும், இல்லத்தை விட்டு வெளியேறும்போதும் இப்பதிகத்தை கூறியபின் சென்றால், கோள்களினால் ஏற்படக்கூடிய தீமைகள் எதுவும் அண்டாது என்பது நம்பிக்கை.
