In a world where people are constantly plugged in, finding communities of like-minded people has become essential. The Internet is here to stay, and as we know, it is impervious to the sexism and misogyny that exist in the "real world" - in some cases, it is more harmful.

As illustrated in our latest article "How Nigerian Women are Building Online Communities " by Angel Nduku-Nwosu, the rise of online women's safe spaces in Nigeria highlights the empowering potential of such communities.

No African team has yet brought home the golden cup. However, many African players have gained international recognition and play in notable leagues. There are countless upcoming talents throughout the continent. But is their talent enough?

Cameroon, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal and Tunisia are the 5 African nations competing at the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

"A couple of weeks ago, during a chat with a friend, I lamented about how 16 days of Activism was almost here again. It’s a time of the year that I am not particularly pleased with. The bane of activism is that gnawing feeling that there isn’t progress being made or that change is far-fetched and quite elusive. Commemorating 16 Days of Activism essentially means the world still needs a reminder that ‘woman’ is human and deserving of complete agency, respect, safety and equality."

25 November is International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women. It also marks the beginning of 16 Days of Activism to end violence against women and girls.

Its Africa Youth Day!

We spoke to Nadia Abdalla about her experience running Kenya Ni Mimi, a government programme to empower young people to take up leadership spaces.

She gives advice on how to lead as young person.

"As a young person in Africa if you have an opportunity to be in leadership spaces, don't hog those spaces. Create a ripple effect. What do I mean by that? If you're in a certain leadership space, create some certain programs or some certain or open some certain doors so that others can also be part of it and others can also benefit from it and others can also grow from it."

"If you're going to tell African stories and you only have people from one part of Africa, you're not really telling African stories, you're telling that part of Africa's stories. So it's just in our DNA. If we're doing it right, we're going to have people from all over Africa. We have people from every single corner of Africa."

- Hamid Ibrahim co-founder and Head of Creative Operations of Kugali Media - the animation company behind Disney's first African animations series Iwájú.

“I felt ready to take on the world” 🌍

This month, we’ve caught up with alumna, Nabila Okino, the co-founder of a social change organisation - The Continental Approach.

Her organisation is trying to change the African narrative by showcasing positive, innovative stories that inspire and propel people to contribute to the development of the continent.

She says that the media often show issues of conflict, corruption and poverty when discussing Africa.

“Although we recognise that these challenges exist […], they are not the sum of our existence.” 🙌

The Continental Approach was borne out of her time spent in the UK. When she was researching and writing papers, she found it difficult to reconcile what she was reading with her own experiences.

At the University of York, she studied International Human Rights Law and Practice. She wanted to study a course that equipped her with “the knowledge and skills to advocate for marginalised groups [and] influence policies”.

Since co-founding The Continental Approach, Nabila has helped some of her contributors gain international visibility and her next step is to expand and “empower more young Africans”.

We wish her the best of luck with this! 👏

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is an impressive hydroelectric-power project created and funded by Ethiopia. It is intended to be a source of electricity for Ethiopians. The location of the dam on the Blue Nile has made it a source of dispute between Ethiopia and countries in the downstream Nile, specifically Egypt and Sudan.

Egypt’s dependence on the dam for human and economic sustenance has led to its consistent call for a legally binding agreement regulating the distribution of the Nile waters.

Nabila Okino explains the sticking points and the way forward. Read more here: https://www.thecontinentalapproach.com/the-rights-angle/gerd-explainer
