Take a peek around Proctor’s Theater in Troy🎭

Built in 1914, this double balcony theater was built by Capital Region entrepreneur Frederick Freeman Proctor. It stands five stories high with an ornate front facade built of brick and marble covered in glazed terra-cotta. The lobby is brilliantly tiled with arched ceilings and paneled walls with staircases leading to the balconies.

Frederick Proctor built several theaters in the region, but his hope was that the Troy theater would be his most grand project. Once complete, the theater stood as the largest in New York State and was among the most popular destinations around.

After Proctors’ death in 1929, the theater continued to operate up until 1977 with the final show, The Longest Yard starring Burt Reynolds, being seen by a crowd of around 170 people.

Now in 2025, after decades of dormancy, the City of Troy is stepping in with a bold new vision: transforming the historic Proctor’s Theater into its new City Hall. The plan aims to breathe new life into the space while preserving its rich architectural character—turning a long-vacant treasure into a hub of civic pride and public service.
