JUST IN : Buhari Buried In Katsina (Photos)

The body of former President Muhammadu Buhari has been in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday.

The burial, conducted according to Islamic rites, marked the culmination of a period of profound national mourning for a leader who served Nigeria both as a military Head of State and a democratically elected president.

The body was interred after a prayer session led by the Chief Imam of Katsina State at 5:50pm.
In a display of unity, Army Generals and Service Chiefs bore the remains of Buhari on a stretcher to his graveside for interment and followed with a 21-gun salute, symbolising a collective final honour from the nation’s military leadership.

The remains of the revered statesman arrived in Katsina earlier on Tuesday from London, where he passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness.

A Nigerian Air Force aircraft conveyed his body, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima and other senior government officials, to the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport.

From the airport, the casket, draped in the national colours, was transported by chopper to Daura, a journey that saw thousands line the routes, eager to catch a final glimpse of their beloved leader.

The funeral prayers and interment took place at Buhari’s private residence, attended by a select gathering of family, close associates, and Islamic clerics.

Among the prominent figures present to pay their last respects were President Bola Tinubu, who personally received the remains in Katsina, alongside several state governors, cabinet members, and former heads of state.

Buhari’s Body Arrives In Katsina For State Burial

The remains of former President Muhammadu Buhari have arrived in Katsina, his home state, for burial.

This was shortly after President Bola Tinubu arrived in Katsina State ahead of the burial ceremony.

This comes as a high-powered delegation from the neighbouring Republic of Niger also landed in Katsina on Tuesday morning to participate in the final burial rites of the late former Nigerian leader, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a London hospital after a prolonged illness.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has also announced his arrival for the burial rites.

“I just arrived in Daura for the interment of former President Muhammadu Buhari,” he wrote in a message shared on X.

Preparations for Buhari’s interment had reached an advanced stage, with his grave already dug in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.

The remains of the late president, via a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft, were accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, and other senior government officials.

Virtually all major hotels in Katsina metropolis have been fully booked since Monday as top government officials, diplomats, military generals, and political allies continue to flood the state for the high-profile state burial.

There has also been a heavy deployment of security operatives across Katsina State, particularly in Daura.

Armoured personnel carriers, battle-ready soldiers, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), and anti-riot police squads have been sighted at strategic locations, including roads leading to Buhari’s Daura residence and hotels accommodating top dignitaries.

Earlier on, First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, and the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, arrived in Katsina.

Late Awujale Of Ijebuland Buried In Islamic Rites

The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has been laid to rest in a private ceremony at his Igbeba residence in Ijebu-Ode.

The revered monarch was buried at 6:00 p.m. on Monday in a mausoleum he personally constructed within his compound.

It was gathered that deceased traditional ruler was buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

Oba Adetona, who died on Sunday at the age of 91, was one of Nigeria’s most respected traditional rulers and the longest-reigning Awujale in history, having ascended the throne on April 2, 1960.

His reign spanned an extraordinary 65 years, marked by visionary leadership, cultural revival, and strong advocacy for good governance and the rule of law.

The late monarch’s burial followed Islamic rites and was witnessed by close family members and palace officials, in line with his personal wishes for a modest and private final journey.

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and were among the dignitaries in attendance.

Also present were Gbenga Daniel, a former governor of Ogun State and serving senator, and Ladi Adebutu, the 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state.

The late Awujale had championed a significant cause during his lifetime, advocating that traditional rulers be buried according to their faith.

In 2020, the bill that legally empowers traditional rulers to be installed and buried in accordance with their religious faith was initiated by the late Awujale, and formally sponsored by Akeem Balogun, the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs representing Ogun Waterside constituency.

The bill passed second reading in March 2020 amid robust debate. It sparked pushback from traditionalist bodies like the Osugbo, who argued it could undermine Yoruba cultural practices. However, Christian and Muslim communities welcomed the bill.

In January 2022, Governor Dapo Abiodun signed the “Obas, Chiefs, Council of Obas and Traditional Council Law of Ogun State 2021” during a ceremony at the Awujale’s palace in Ijebu-Ode.

The law includes a provision that preserves and protects the fundamental right of traditional rulers to be installed and buried according to their religious beliefs or convictions. This means that a Christian or Muslim traditional ruler in Ogun State may now legally choose a religious burial in line with their faith in addition to any required traditional rites.

The burial of Yoruba traditional leaders has long been a source of dispute in the past between religious families and traditional institutions over how deceased kings should be laid to rest.
