New Release: One unmistakable sign of a true creative is an uncanny ability to find new ways to express themselves. Sometimes this manifests in new methods for exploring and developing their art. Pianist/composer Michael Wolff looked to beat-making and looping software to help him write new music, which he then arranged for his talented and dedicated Trio, featuring bassist Ben Allison and drummer Allan Mednard. New Releases: There is a spirit that passes through all the folkloric music of the world. The sounds may differ from region to region and from people to people, but folk music holds deep truths that speak to the connective tissue of humanity. There is something mysteriously universal in the way peasants or, for that matter, jazz musicians approach music.

For this double release, long time collaborators pianist Lucian Ban and violist Mat Maneri alongside legendary woodwind master John Surman further explore the folk music of Transylvania collected by Béla Bartók more than a hundred years ago. For the past five years the trio has deepened the spirit of their music while touring, as can be heard on their new recordings, Cantica Profana and The Athenaeum Concert (vinyl LP only).

New Release: Guitarist Diego Barber discovered Dominico Scarlatti’s music through his mentor, and celebrated guitarist, Riccardo Gallén, who had Barber rapt with attention in a performance of Scarlatti’s Sonata No. 27. After hearing vocalist Theo Bleckmann performing a Schubert lieder with Uri Caine, Barber decided to adapt Scarlatti’s sonatas for guitar and voice, thus birthing his new recording, Scarlatti Sonatas. The classic repertoire of Jobim, Gilberto, etc. have remained iconic and are routinely revisited in standard arrangements. Vocalist/composer Catina DeLuna and pianist/composer/arranger Otmaro Ruíz have chosen a different path, one highlighting obscure Brazilian gems and offering vastly revised versions of well-known classics in performance and on record.
