Long before she stepped onto the bridge of Star Trek: Voyager, Jeri Ryan was just a nineteen-year-old trying to get her first break in Hollywood. She landed a small extra role in John Hughes’ Planes, Trains and Automobiles, sitting quietly on a bus beside two comedy legends Steve Martin and John Candy. But once the cameras rolled, all that professionalism flew out the window. Their off the cuff antics, their faces, their timing everything was too much. Jeri couldn’t hold it in. She laughed through take after take.
John Hughes, a director known for his patience but also his perfectionism, gave her multiple chances. Yet every time Martin and Candy launched into their scene, the young extra cracked up again. Eventually, Hughes had no choice but to gently let her go and reshoot the entire scene without her. It wasn’t anger it was timing. Comedy, after all, depends on rhythm, and Jeri’s laughter though genuine threw off the beat.
Years later, as Jeri Ryan transformed into one of sci-fi’s most iconic characters, Seven of Nine, that story became a favorite Hollywood anecdote. It showed how she began not with flawless composure, but with genuine, uncontrollable laughter. Even in failure, it was clear: she had the spark of someone meant to stand out. Sometimes, losing a small role is just the first laugh before a legendary career begins.
