Growing up Filipino-American… in color palettes 🇵🇭🎨
In honor of AAPI Heritage Month and in true Filipino time fashion, I’m happy to share a piece of my culture… even if it’s the last day 😅
Like a lot of other FilAm’s (and children of immigrants as a whole!), I struggled with my identity. I was either too Filipino or too American, or not enough to claim either identity. I, too, tried to downplay my Filipino-ness and used papaya soap to lighten my skin, only ate American school lunches, didn’t learn Tagalog, and tried to hide the maximalism and organized chaos of an immigrant home.
When I moved out of Daly City, my exposure to my Filipino culture decreased over time, and that’s when I truly appreciated and missed it the most. I relied on my university’s Filipino club (s/o .ucsc!) to find community, consumed more Filipino media and history, and often recreated my mom’s cooking to keep in touch with my culture.
Now as an adult living alone, I’ve fully embraced my identity as a Filipino-American and try to honor my culture in my daily life whether if that’s cooking a Filipino dish, supporting FilAm creators and small businesses, or even using the walis (broom) that my mom gifted me to clean my apartment.
I’m grateful to my family for keeping the Filipino culture alive in our household even after immigrating to the states. This experience wasn’t perfect, but it’s a huge part in who I am today. 😌
Here are a few color palettes inspired by the things I absolutely loved about growing up Filipino American. Hope you enjoy!
