First time working on a diamond shaped dance floor. Or as others might call it, a regular dance floor just rotated 45 degrees. . Here are my thoughts ~ I love it.

Still have the proximity to the people I want, full view of the action. However, because I was on the corner rather than in line with one of the edges, 0 people mistakenly bumped into the dj booth or tried to use it as a coasterless coffee table for their gin & tonic. A+ give me it again.

Video teams, can you help clarify something for me? Let me preface this with saying that this is not a snarky caption, I genuinely do not understand the process and want to learn.

Are those prison yard lights necessary during dancing? Some video teams set up these additional lights to light either a first dance or the speaker for a toast for example. I have no issue with this, in fact I support it, if it facilitates in providing the best of your work.

However, for dancing this is where I need details. Do we need these? And if so, for how long? No one wants to be grinding on their boo while your lights are melting their face off, respectfully. All jokes aside, the venue dims their lights but with these on it just defeats the purpose.

So please enLIGHTen me.

Off the shelf really isn’t good enough. When I come up with a concept for a booth I draft a list of design requirements that need to hit both functionality and aesthetics. Nothing exists to purchase ready made so we begin the custom route.

For this booth my main desire was to be able to have it match historic venues. Think of places that are so old that they had lead paint on their walls at one point in time.(ironically the one in the image is a new venue) I wanted more “old world’” or “regal” design elements. I have booths that scream modern, in both the shape and the paint or finish, but this one is different.

I think the visual impact is all in the proportions. From the front, I had to play with the width to height ratio. Too tall, it visually looks off, too wide and it wont fit in an elevator. Once this is set we were able to tack on different trim widths to see which size created the shaker style picture frame without looking too fat or too skinny. Finally, the tabletop overhang, looking like your moms kitchen counters from the 90’s, is the icing on the cake.

Anyway, another 1 of 1 build you won’t see again until someone copies. Hope you likey.

I’m not sure if you’re just lurking or you actually read my captions. However, in my last post I wrote about “easy crowds” to work with. Both crowds this weekend for J&B as well as A&D were pretty similar in that regard.

Both nights the dance floor was electric, energy unmatched and the crowd connection was on point. Upon finishing the weekend I was really happy with the outcome. But like I said in my previous post, we all face a tough crowd at some point. It’s coming, I’m sure & I’ll be ready. 💪🏼

I have been asked the question “What is a good DJ” many times in the past. Almost instinctively I’ve resorted to: someone who can both program and mix music flawlessly, someone who is elegant and not overbearing on the microphone, or someone who puts in the investment and effort to provide the best sounding and looking equipment for their clients.

All of that I believe is valid in some capacity. However, the more I think about it, the answer is much more simple than that. A good DJ is someone who can make people who do not want to dance,  dance.

Some crowds are easy, and some are hard. For the record Abby & David had and easy crowd, full dance floor all night with no gaps. However, some crowds aren’t as easy, they are more reluctant to dance and I feel as this is where a good DJ is defined. How they work with a flat crowd and adapt will give you the answer.

I don’t normally do birthday parties. I am the type of person who thrives under pressure. Hence why the wedding scene is for me. I want a one shot combination of music programming, mixing, mic work and presentation to leave an everlasting positive impression on a family.

Now, I am not saying providing music for your aunts retirement party or birthday party won’t do the same. Wait, actually I am. While still an important family gathering, the truth is that the stakes and pressure aren’t as high. Sometimes music at these events are even seen as optional.

With all that being said I did a birthday party. Hard to say no when the homie transformed his backyard into Mykonos for a night ~ An added bonus is that we got to be in Mykonos without the €200 order of fries at the beach. 🧿

I dig the 35mm film add on that photographers provide for 2 reasons:

1. The photos give a cool this vintage feel even in the most modern setting.
2. The grainy nature of the photos helps hide the zit on my forehead.

CVS 1 Hour Photo (or however these get developed) for the win.
