Hoard Explorer This memory palace is a hoarder house. Part memoir and part freewheeling meditation on stuff, waste, and death. Based on a true story.

This hollow book has been with me since I was a toddler. Everybody loves secret compartments and things-not-as-they-seem. No idea where my parents got it, but it seems to be of a set with a tiny liquor box (complete with shot glasses and carafe) disguised as a small stack of books. I requisitioned it as a teenager and its meaningful contents have changed over the years, until it was sealed up in a shoebox and more or less forgotten until now.

At a very young age I remember, here in this specific copy of this particular paperback, a name was pointed out, a relative who featured in this remarkably dark saga. One of the good guys.

This will be the first of many posts about this shoebox. It's paydirt, a revelation. Precisely the kind of evocative junk drawer I'd hoped to unearth from within The Hoard when I brought it all back with me.

The year was 2001. It was almost noon that day in mid-December, and I found myself at the Barnes & Noble down the viaduct in U Village. I was picking up a copy of Essays and Sketches of Mark Twain and a book on English bread and yeast, presumably for Sal. I also threw in some notecards with the vaguely holiday themed image of Monet's "The Magpie". My smoker's cough was getting the better of me so I popped a cherry cough drop, which I never finished.

This was taking up about half of the whole bottom shelf in a back quadrant of the Vault. There's a lovely, unfinished beveled stump of a baluster along with a nice broad board sporting a heavy coat of poly coating. Both seem very useful, don't you agree? Long cardboard tubes are occasionally good to have on hand, as is that bright green floral cupboard liner. I had used some of that landscape w**d barrier to sheath some rockwool inside of some acoustic panels I made, but I think I'll use something else next time. I'm sitting on a pile of rockwool right now.
