UWG FAILS TO PROTECT STUDENT SAFETY FROM RADICAL CONSERVATIVE RHETORIC UNDER THE GUISE OF FREE SPEECH
Alex Stein’s UWG visit sparks outrage after hate speech, slurs, and student harassment.

Alex Stein, a far-right conservative debater, came to The University of West Georgia through the student organization Turning Point USA at UWG on April 24. Stein was advertised as a friendly debater coming to campus to give students an opportunity to participate in healthy political debate.

Instead, Stein shouted expletives and slurs at students through a microphone from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The hate speech Stein voiced directly attacked students from marginalized communities at UWG, with specific focus on LGBTQ+ students and students of color.

“I was told about the event the day before it happened by a professor,” said Eshkar Kaidar-Heafetz, a UWG student and active member of the UWG debate team. “Walking to the TLC that day, TPUSA had a table set up between the TLC and the library that did not have the name TPUSA, only the turning point arrow, masquerading as a free speech organization…So that was really the start of things that were really weird for me.”

UWG’S ART ATELIER CREATES INTERACTIVE MURAL FOR THE CHILDREN OF THE EARLY LEARNING CENTER

In collaboration with the College of Education, the Art Atelier, a professional program within the University of West Georgia’s art department, completed a mural for UWG’s Early Learning Center. Guided by Art Professor Ryan Lamfers, students Caleb Nase, Jacey Singleton and now alumna, Sarah Gailey, designed a texture wall featuring interactive elements and depictions of local animals to help children learn about the world around them. The mural highlights the power of creativity in educational environments and equips students with skills they can use in their future careers.

“The mural isn’t just something to look at, it’s something to explore,” said Lamfers. “Interaction is a powerful learning tool.”

The mural, themed around Georgia wildlife, features 3D and textural elements that encourage children to learn through touch and sensory exploration. From an ant hill they can climb over, to a racoon with a puzzle for a tail, these features create a space that invites children to learn through play and curiosity.

UWG PR STUDENTS SCORE A GEORGIA POWER TOUR AT ATLANTA CORPORATE OFFICE

On April 15, Public Relations and Communications students from the University of West Georgia took a field trip to Atlanta for an exclusive behind-the-scenes experience at Georgia Power’s corporate headquarters. The visit, led by UWG alum and Georgia Power’s Director of Communications, Jacob Hawkins, offered students a look into how strategic communications operate within one of the state’s largest and most regulated industries.

This field trip followed Georgia Power’s $25,000 donation to UWG’s student-run PR firm, bluestone, a partnership that underscores the company’s ongoing investment in the future of communications. The donation, presented earlier in the semester by Hawkins and his team on behalf of Georgia Power, laid the groundwork for a hands-on learning opportunity that blended academics with real-world practice.

Over a month has passed since the University of West Georgia hosted the Students for Life organization for its controversial and heated Abortion is Violence event on March 4 featuring speaker Lydia Taylor Davis. The students of UWG passionately shared their perspectives on the abortion issue at this event.

The topic of abortion remains a major talking point among Georgia voters as the House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee conducted a hearing regarding House Bill 441 on March 26. HB 441 defines life as beginning at conception and equates abortion with homicide. This session attracted quite the audience, including both supporters and opposers of the bill.

JUSTYNE LOBELLO WORKS TO CREATE A POWERFUL AND MEANINGFUL LEGACY FOR SON WITH HELP FROM THE MINECRAFT COMMUNITY

On November 22, 2023 Justyne Lobello’s world was turned upside down when her son, Kevin, was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a rare and fatal form of pediatric cancer.

“[DIPG] is a long string of words that is the name of the tumor my son had. It basically means that it’s both contained and not contained,” said Lobello. “It’s very specifically in the pawns of the brain stem which is the bulbous part at the top of the brain stem, and there is no cure.

The condition is always fatal and the two year survival are is less than 10%. Kevin lived sixteen months and one day after diagnosis, and it was a very difficult journey for our family.” continued Lobello.

After returning to the University of West Georgia campus from spring break, students were surprised to see a dumpster outside the Pafford Social Science Building filled to the brim with old library books. While it is not out of the ordinary for the library to make space for new books in its catalog, it was alarming for students to see hundreds of books that looked like they were being thrown away without notice.

Recently, the UWG library has been in the process of adding new books and resources to their shelves and has been deciding which books to throw away to make space for the new ones. Fortunately, UWG offers students access to thousands of digitized resources. The books that have been removed will still be accessible to students online.

University cuts sociology graduate program, students express concerns.

“If you want to serve, become an advocate, or effect change in your community, choose Sociology,” is the first sentence on a poster advertising Sociology on a bulletin board in the Pafford Social Science building at the University of West Georgia.

At the start of this semester, UWG made the tough decision to close their Graduate Sociology program. While still being offered on the undergraduate level through both major and minor programs, many students have felt discouraged at the news and worry about the future of sociology.

“Sociology is my minor,” said a UWG Honors student. “Sociology is an essential degree for people going into social work.”
