Today, National Press Freedom Day, we celebrate the 175ᵗʰ birth anniversary of Marcelo H. del Pilar, the Father of Philippine Journalism.

Del Pilar, also known by his pen name Pláridel, is a distinguished figure in Philippine history best known for promoting political reforms in the late 19ᵗʰ century through the Philippine Propaganda Movement. Succeeding Graciano López Jaena, he became the editor of La Solidaridad in 1889 and took on the role until the newspaper's discontinuation in 1895.

National Press Freedom Day, which is observed every August 30 as mandated by Republic Act 11699, honors the vital role the press plays in society. Beyond reporting newsworthy events, a noble profession such as journalism demands steadfast commitment to opening the eyes of the public and amplifying calls from the unheard without compromising integrity and ethical standards.

May this working holiday serve as an invitation to condemn and resist any form of violence toward principled journalists who serve as combatants in the battle against disinformation and misinformation.

Today, August 25, 2025, the Philippines commemorates National Heroes Day, a time to honor the countless men and women whose courage and sacrifices have shaped the nation’s history.

Observed every last Monday of August as a regular non-working holiday, National Heroes Day pays tribute not to a single figure, but to all Filipinos—known and unknown—who have dedicated their lives to the cause of freedom, justice, and national dignity. From the revolutionaries who fought against colonial rule to modern-day frontliners and civic leaders, the day recognizes the enduring spirit of service and bravery across generations.

The observance was first institutionalized on October 28, 1931, during the American colonial period, through Act No. 3827, which declared the last Sunday of August as National Heroes Day. Decades later, in 2007, the holiday was moved to the last Monday of August under Republic Act No. 9492, aligning with the country’s “holiday economics” policy. Though the law itself does not specify one event, the date is often associated symbolically with the Cry of Pugad Lawin of 1896, which marked the beginning of the Philippine Revolution.

Beyond being a day of rest, National Heroes Day is a moment of reflection. It invites every Filipino to remember the resilience and patriotism of those who came before us, and to ask how we, too, can embody the same values of courage, integrity, and selfless service in our own time.

On this day 42 years ago, former Senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. was assassinated at the Manila International Airport upon his return from the United States where he spent years in exile.

Aquino was a prominent critic of the Marcos Sr. regime and was arrested after the martial law declaration in September 1972. After almost eight years of imprisonment, he suffered a heart attack and was granted permission by the administration to seek medical attention overseas.

He was self-exiled in Boston, Massachusetts until he decided to return to the Philippines in 1983, hoping to negotiate with former President Marcos. On August 21 that year, shortly after his arrival at the airport, he was fatally shot in the head.

His death served as an inspiration for the opposition and encouraged many to challenge the system at the time. More than four decades later, Ninoy remains a key figure in contemporary Philippine history and a remarkable icon of democracy.

Today marks the 147ᵗʰ birth anniversary of former President Manuel Luis Quezon—the second president of the Philippines, known for advocating social justice and absolute autonomy.

Quezon was born in Baler on August 19, 1878. He served as the second president of the Philippines and the first president of the US-established Commonwealth until his death on August 1, 1944. His efforts significantly influenced the Tydings-McDuffie Act which granted the Philippines total independence in 1946.

On October 12, 1939, Quezon signed Commonwealth Act No. 502 into law, leading to the establishment of Quezon City as a municipality. Being known as the "Father of the Philippine National Language," the Philippine National Language Month or Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa is also celebrated during August in his honor.

QCGADC spearheads "Suporta, Serbisyo, Saklolo" seminar
✒️ Cyril Lorraine Garcia

To deepen learners’ understanding of gender rights and promote inclusive empowerment, the Quezon City Gender and Development Council (QCGADC) held the “Suporta, Serbisyo, Saklolo” seminar on August 7, 2025, at Sta. Lucia Senior High School (SLSHS).

The event began with opening remarks by the Principal, Mr. Noel N. Valerio, who acknowledged the presence of representatives from various clubs and organizations. He emphasized that the seminar’s purpose was not only to inform but also to encourage participants to reflect on the importance of equality in society. “We are all created equal,” he said, stressing that the issue lies not in gender itself but in the rigid roles society imposes on it. He further highlighted the importance of acknowledging both biological realities and the flexibility of social roles, particularly in relation to women’s unique contributions to the community.

The seminar featured Ms. Kristin Gail Clemente, a volunteer from Bayi Inc.—a non-government organization that advocates for women’s leadership and political participation. Building on this foundation, she encouraged participants to explore key concepts in Gender and Development (GAD) and SOGIESC (S*xual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and S*x Characteristics). She underscored that while certain biological functions remain constant, gender roles are socially constructed and can evolve to promote inclusion and respect.

A key focus of the seminar was Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Clemente illustrated how violence can manifest in both visible and subtle forms, ranging from catcalling and manipulation to sexual abuse and financial control. She explained that silence and stigma often prevent victims from speaking out and emphasized that survivors must be met with belief, support, and safety rather than judgment. Relevant national laws—including Republic Act 9262 (Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004) and Republic Act 11313 (Safe Spaces Act)—were discussed to inform participants of their legal rights and available support systems.

In addition, significant policy proposals such as the SOGIESC Equality Bill, the Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Bill, the Divorce Bill, and initiatives ensuring safe and legal access to abortion were introduced. These measures aim to address the real-life challenges faced by women and members of the LGBTQIA+ community, including violence, limited autonomy, and unequal access to reproductive health services.

The seminar also highlighted local services available within Quezon City, such as the Gender Fair Ordinance, the Quezon City Protection Center, and the 122 Helpline. These programs provide survivor-centered assistance, including legal aid, psychosocial support, safe shelter, and medical care.

The event concluded with a collective call to action. Participants were urged to challenge harmful norms, support inclusive and responsive policies, and work together to build a community where respect, equality, and safety are upheld. Through continued education and advocacy, QCGADC reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a more just and compassionate Quezon City for all.
