Shame and blame, dry and boring, data and numbers...These are not what inspire health-related behavior changes. Yet so many PSAs keep trying the same approach with not nearly enough effective change on the other side.

Humor, however, has been shown repeatedly to successfully influence positive health-related behavior change. It can increase the impact of persuasive messages, improves motivation to change behavior, and actually helps us to remember the message longer.

Humor can help people feel more included and helps people feel more connected.

That last part can't be overstated, especially with where we find ourselves in human history.

This is precisely why our Mask Up, It's Cool ad campaign is intended to be humorous. Interesting. Inclusive. Supportive. And inspirational.

When our founder Parijat Deshpande, Integrative High-Risk Pregnancy Specialist started Sticky Bun Productions, it was with the goal to tell stories that inspire change. She recognized the immense power of storytelling to encourage viewers to think and behave differently.

Through storytelling in TV and film, we've seen systemic and cultural change begin to happen around AIDS, LGBTQ+, divorce, single motherhood, etc.

So it was only natural that Sticky Bun Productions first project to move into production would be a campaign promoting health by preventing the spread of SARS2.

The ad campaign is focused on telling a humorous story, written by the exceptional Shelby Slauer, because we know humor has the power to influence health-related behaviors.

When we were interviewing writers for our Mask Up, It's Cool PSA, almost every single applicant had a personal story to share about how SARS2 affected their family.

People shared stories of their loved ones developing chronic illness and disability. Far too many shared stories of losing their loved ones to the virus.

But did you know, according to a recent study out of Berkeley , if 80% of people wore masks infection rates would plummet? Just 80%.

To give you an idea of what 80% means,

80% of people
..eat fast food weekly...experienced a hotter than average July in 2023...have taken a nap in the last 3 months...say eating watermelon puts them in a better mood...under 30 say they cannot drive without music...say they drive with their pets...say their school aged kids use tablets or technology.

We've already hit 80% for lots of things.

80% doable. 80% is reachable. 80% is attainable.

And just think of all the lives we can save if 80% of us did our part right now.

MEET SHELBY!

Shelby Slauer is a writer and performer based in Brooklyn. Her writing credits include Overheard NY, Reductress and ClickHole.

She has been featured in Vulture and The New York Times.

She graduated from NYU for Film & Television, with honors because she never had to take math.

Shelby is hilarious, intelligent, and such a kind and wonderful person to work with. We're thrilled to have her be our writer for our Mask Up PSA.

MEET OUR TEAM!

We are so excited to be working with Lauren Ashcraft here at Sticky Bun Productions!

Lauren is a standup comedian, writer, producer, and devoted mom from New York City. She trained Gotham Comedy Club, Squirrel Theater, and Magnet Theater, and has performed at clubs all around New York City.

Her grant-funded sketch pilot "Pigeon Food" premiered at Q.E.D. Astoria in 2021, and she hosts and produces "Momedy," a standout comedy show showcasing mothers and non-binary parent comedians.

She's passionate about telling and producing compelling stories that raise awareness for causes close to her heart.

Lauren is currently a producer for our Mask Up PSA and head writer for an unnamed project in development! She's funny, kind hearted, loving, and such a joy to have as part of our team!

PSA!

There are approximately COVID related 500 deaths per week in the United States at this time.

There are over 4 million people out of work in the US due to Long COVID.

Research has shown there are significant and serious implications for reproductive health and risks for pregnancy and fetal complications even with mild acute infections.

This is why we at Sticky Bun Productions are working on a PSA to bring back necessary mitigations to keep all of us safely doing the activities we love.

Without getting into dry and boring details and data, and without shaming anyone, this PSA actually uses humor to show our viewers just how easy it is to be safe AND be out in the world doing the things we love!
