Man Found In Roadway Dies After Gunshot Wound Discovered At Hospital

Baton Rouge, La. — Baton Rouge Police homicide detectives are investigating the death of a man found lying in the roadway early Monday, September 21, 2026 morning. The incident was reported right after midnight in the 2200 block of Bardwell Drive.

According to police, a vehicle struck the man while he was lying in the roadway. He was transported to a local hospital, where medical personnel discovered he had also suffered a gunshot wound.

The man later died from his injuries. Authorities have not publicly released his identity, and investigators have not announced what caused his death or established publicly when the shooting occurred in relation to the vehicle striking him.

Four Killed, Child Critically Wounded In Houma Stabbings; Suspect Faces Murder Charges

Houma, La. — Four adults were killed and a young child critically wounded during a series of stabbings Saturday, September 12, 2026 in the 200 block of Ashland Drive. Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office deputies discovered four deceased victims while investigating after a wounded juvenile was located.

Family representative Brandon Thiel identified those killed as Verna Mae Verdin, Letha Verret, Paul Verret and Krissy Lynn Parfait. The family identified the surviving child as a 6-year-old boy and reported that he remained in critical but stable condition.

Investigators identified Kaegan Jude Solet, 47, of Houma, as a person of interest before authorities located him Sunday. Detectives have since obtained warrants accusing Solet of four counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder.

Solet remains under continuous law enforcement supervision while receiving treatment at an out-of-area hospital for injuries investigators believe were sustained during the alleged crimes. The Sheriff's Office says he will be transferred directly into its custody and formally booked once medically discharged.

The Terrebonne Parish District Attorney's Office is preparing to seek indictments in the case, with grand jury proceedings scheduled for October 27.

Solet has not been convicted of the charges and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

FBI-Led Operation Results in 662 Arrests and 315 Guns Seized Across Louisiana

Baton Rouge, La. — A three-month law enforcement operation stretching across Louisiana resulted in hundreds of arrests and the seizure of hundreds of fi****ms, large quantities of illegal drugs and more than $325,000 in cash, according to newly released figures from the FBI.

The FBI announced Monday, September 14, 2026 that Operation Summer Heat 2.0 resulted in 662 people being arrested on more than 1,000 state and federal charges between June 1 and August 31, 2026. Authorities also reported seizing 315 fi****ms, approximately 207 kilograms of illegal narcotics and $325,853 in cash during operations across Louisiana.

The initiative brought together more than two dozen federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. Rather than concentrating enforcement in a single city, investigators divided their efforts among the Greater New Orleans area, Greater Baton Rouge area and North Louisiana.

The largest number of arrests came from the New Orleans region, where authorities reported 532 arrests and 224 fi****ms seized. Investigators also recovered approximately 137 kilograms of illegal drugs and more than $15,000 in cash from operations in that region.

In the Baton Rouge area, authorities reported 95 arrests and 76 fi****ms seized. The operation also resulted in the seizure of approximately 54 kilograms of illegal drugs and $270,739 in cash. Federal officials said enforcement efforts there included Baton Rouge neighborhoods as well as surrounding communities.

North Louisiana accounted for another 35 arrests and 15 fi****ms seized. Authorities reported recovering approximately 15.8 kilograms of illegal drugs and $39,947 in cash from enforcement activity in the northern portion of the state.

The drugs recovered statewide included co***ne, fentanyl, methamphetamine and ma*****na. The FBI said investigators targeted drug-trafficking organizations, neighborhood-based gangs and individuals accused of victimizing children.

Authorities used several investigative strategies during the operation, including surveillance, intelligence gathering, controlled drug purchases and proactive patrols. More than 180 state and local officers were also federally deputized during the initiative, allowing participating agencies to work more closely across traditional jurisdictional boundaries.

Louisiana law enforcement agencies participating in the statewide effort included Louisiana State Police, the Louisiana Division of Probation and Parole, New Orleans Police Department, Baton Rouge Police Department, Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office, Shreveport Police Department and numerous other parish and municipal agencies.

Federal prosecutors from Louisiana's Middle and Western districts also participated, along with the Louisiana Attorney General's Office, Louisiana National Guard and several sheriff's offices, police departments and district attorney's offices.

The FBI said Homeland Security Investigations provided funding for equipment through the Homeland Security Task Force Opioid Initiative, while FBI funding helped cover overtime associated with the operation.

While the FBI has connected the initiative to broader reductions in violent crime, the arrest totals themselves should not be interpreted as convictions. Individuals arrested during the operation face various state and federal cases, and criminal defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Operation Summer Heat 2.0 officially covered the period from June 1 through August 31, with federal officials releasing the statewide results on September 14.

Baton Rouge Police Fatally Shoot Suspect After Stabbing, Pursuit and SWAT Standoff

Baton Rouge, La. — A violent series of events that began with an elderly man being stabbed nearly 20 times ended Tuesday, September 8, 2026 morning with a suspect fatally shot by Baton Rouge Police inside an abandoned apartment complex.

According to information reviewed by Louisiana Breaking News, Baton Rouge Police responded to Winthrop Avenue Monday night around 11:15 p.m.after an elderly man was reportedly stabbed repeatedly and his vehicle was stolen. Police Chief T.J. Morse said the victim, described as being in his 70s, suffered nearly 20 stab wounds.

Officers later located the stolen vehicle and attempted to stop the driver, leading to a pursuit through Baton Rouge. Police said the suspect eventually abandoned the vehicle and ran into an abandoned apartment complex along Titian Avenue in the Mall City area around 3 a.m.

The situation then developed into a standoff. Baton Rouge Police called its SWAT team to the property after the suspect barricaded himself inside the complex. Officers eventually entered the building as they attempted to take him into custody.

Morse said the confrontation escalated after officers encountered the suspect inside. According to the police chief's account, the man grabbed an officer's rifle during the encounter. Police then fired, striking the suspect.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office confirmed that one person died following the officer-involved shooting Tuesday morning. Authorities had not publicly released the man's identity at the time this report was prepared.

The stabbing victim survived the initial attack and was transported for medical treatment. Officials have not released a detailed update on his current condition.

LSU Could Face Expulsion From SEC as Conference Leaders Prepare for Thursday Meeting

Baton Rouge, La. — One of the most extraordinary disputes in Louisiana college sports has escalated to the point that LSU's membership in the Southeastern Conference could now be at stake. SEC university presidents and chancellors are scheduled to meet Thursday to consider whether LSU should remain a member of the conference.

The potential action became public Tuesday, September 8, after the SEC amended its federal lawsuit involving LSU, university officials and head football coach Lane Kiffin. Court filings reveal that conference leaders are preparing to discuss possible termination of LSU's membership. Under SEC rules, removing a member institution would require support from at least two-thirds of the conference's university presidents.

At the center of the fight is a growing dispute over whether athletes who previously signed professional contracts can return to college competition. Remains Found In Trash Can Identified As Missing 78 Yr-Old Louisiana Man; Son Charged With Unlawful Disposal of Human Remains

Washington Parish, La. — A months-long mystery surrounding the disappearance of a 78-year-old Louisiana man has taken another major turn after authorities confirmed human remains recovered near Bogalusa earlier this year belong to him.

The Washington Parish Coroner's Office has identified the remains as Carley Provost Sr., who had been missing for months before authorities recovered human remains in January 2026. The identification was announced Thursday, September 3.

According to information reviewed by Louisiana Breaking News, the remains were recovered from a trash can near North Jones Road outside the Bogalusa city limits after Carley Provost Jr., the man's son and caretaker, led Washington Parish deputies to the location.

Authorities have now charged Provost Jr. with unlawful disposal of human remains in connection with his father's body. The charge concerns the handling and disposal of the remains and does not, by itself, accuse him of causing his father's death.

The Washington Parish Coroner's Office worked with the LSU FACES Laboratory and Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory during the identification process. Authorities said analysis of Provost Sr.'s remains did not indicate signs of foul play.

Provost Sr.'s family said he had been missing since June 2025, although authorities were not made aware of his disappearance until months later. Questions surrounding his whereabouts intensified after his son was jailed in January in connection with a separate criminal investigation.

Oakdale Police Officer Arrested After State Investigation Into Alleged Misconduct

Oakdale, La. — An Oakdale Police Department officer has been arrested following a Louisiana State Police investigation into allegations that he abused his law enforcement position in two separate incidents.

Louisiana State Police identified the officer as Jalen Melbert, 33, of Oakdale. State Police said detectives with its Criminal Investigations Division began investigating a criminal complaint involving Melbert on August 19, 2026.

Investigators allege Melbert attempted to use his position as a law enforcement officer to influence a victim to engage in sexual activity.

During a separate incident, State Police alleges Melbert coordinated with another person to place illegal narcotics at a residence, resulting in an unsuspecting individual being arrested.

Following the investigation, detectives obtained an arrest warrant through the 33rd Judicial District Court charging Melbert with Abuse of Office and Malfeasance in Office.

Melbert was arrested at approximately 1:30 p.m. on August 31, 2026, and booked into the Allen Parish Jail on those charges. Louisiana State Police said the investigation remains active and additional charges could be forthcoming.

Oakdale Police Chief Kevin Johnson said the department is fully cooperating with Louisiana State Police and emphasized that allegations of misconduct are taken seriously.

The department said maintaining its integrity and the community’s trust remains a priority while the investigation proceeds.

Plans filed with the Shreveport-Caddo Metropolitan Planning Commission under Case No. 26-99-C identify a Jack in the Box restaurant with a drive-thru at 6197 Greenwood Road, near Pines Road and Interstate 20.

The project represents something more concrete than corporate interest in bringing the fast-food chain back to northwest Louisiana. A specific Shreveport property has now been tied to the restaurant through the local development process, providing the first clear location for the brand's return to the city.

Louisiana Breaking News reviewed the development information as Jack in the Box works to expand its footprint in Louisiana. The company has also identified the Shreveport-Bossier market as an area available for franchise development, placing the planned Greenwood Road restaurant within a broader push by the chain to grow in the region.

Jack in the Box previously operated restaurants in the Shreveport-Bossier area in the mid-90's before disappearing from the local market. The planned Greenwood Road restaurant would bring the chain back to Shreveport after that lengthy absence and introduce the brand to a generation of local customers who may never have had a Jack in the Box in their hometown.

Suspect In Critical Condition After Shooting Himself Inside Rapides Parish Jail During Booking

Rapides Parish, LA — A suspect remains in critical condition after authorities say he shot himself while being processed inside the Rapides Parish Detention Center on Friday evening.

According to the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred at approximately 5:50 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, while deputies were booking the suspect into Rapides Parish Detention Center 1.

Investigators said the suspect was undergoing the booking process, including a strip search by corrections deputies, when he became non-compliant. Authorities say the suspect forced his way out of the designated search area and into a hallway inside the jail, where he allegedly retrieved a small handgun concealed in his crotch area and fired a single round, striking himself in the head.

Corrections deputies and jail medical staff immediately began life-saving measures before Pafford Ambulance arrived and transported the suspect to a local hospital. The suspect remains in critical condition.

The Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigations Division, Corrections Security Investigators, and Internal Affairs Investigators are conducting a joint investigation into the incident.
