We are making our waste and recycling collections fairer and more efficient. We are also making it easier for you to recycle.
🌿 Garden Waste (for all areas in Cumberland)
From week commencing Monday 31 March 2025 if you have a garden waste bin you will get one bin collected for free each fortnight but any additional bin will have a yearly £40 collection charge.
You will be able to sign up for extra garden waste bin collections using an online form on www.cumberland.gov.uk/wastechanges or by contacting our Customer Services team from week commencing 10 March.
Collections will be every two weeks between March and November.
🗑️ Waste Collections (Former Allerdale area)
In the former Allerdale area, waste collections will be fortnightly from May 2025, bringing it in line with Carlisle and Copeland. Paper and cardboard recycling will increase to fortnightly from September 2025.
From April 2025 you will be able to request a free replacement 180 litre bin (most residents have a 120-litre bin) using an online form on www.cumberland.gov.uk/wastechanges or by contacting our Customer Services team.
♻ Recycling (Carlisle area) - from May 2026
Carlisle residents will see a big improvement to their recycling collections. From May 2026, the majority of boxes and bags will be replaced with wheeled bins - one for paper and cardboard, and another for glass, cans, and plastics. The frequency of collections will remain the same, but the switch to bins will make recycling more convenient.
Why are we making these changes?
✅ Support fairness - our aim is for all residents to have the same level of waste collection service.
✅ Increase recycling - the changes will help increase recycling rates, reducing the impact of waste on our environment in Cumberland.
✅ More efficient service - we collect 99% of bins on time. These changes will help us improve efficiency and maintain a high level of reliability across Cumberland.
