Before we landed in Albania, we were told the food scene was heavily meat-based and incredibly hard to navigate if you have any dietary restrictions. The reality? We had some of the freshest, most flavorful meals of our lives here—and it cost a fraction of what you’d pay in Western Europe.

Albanian cuisine is this beautiful, sun-drenched crossover of Mediterranean and Balkan flavors. If you’re a meat lover, the traditional slow-baked Tavë Kosi is an absolute must-order. But if you are fully plant-based or vegetarian, you will not starve here.

Traditional taverns are packed with naturally vegetarian and vegan gems like Fergesë, grilled wild vegetables, fresh local olives, stuffed peppers, local cheeses, and hot, flaky byrek.
