the reconstruction of Frankfurt's old town (Altstadt). The top picture shows the former Technisches Rathaus in 2009, and the bottom picture shows the new buildings in the same location in 2019.
The original old town was largely destroyed during World War II.
The Technisches Rathaus, a brutalist-style building, was built in the 1970s and demolished between 2012 and 2014.
The reconstruction project, known as the "New Frankfurt Old Town," was completed in 2018.
The project involved rebuilding 35 houses, including 15 that were historically accurate reconstructions of original buildings.
The area is located between the Frankfurt Cathedral and the Römerberg.

In 1946, the Würzburg Residence stood in silence — its roof torn open, its frescoes darkened by fire. What had once been Europe’s finest baroque palace was reduced to echoes of its former self. Yet even then, amid ruin, the symmetry remained — as if beauty itself refused to fall.

Today, the same courtyard glows again. The palace shimmers gold beneath the sunset, fountains sing, and laughter drifts where rubble once lay. The stones are new, but the soul is the same.

Würzburg didn’t just rebuild its walls — it rebuilt its pride.

the reconstruction of the Barberini Palace in Potsdam, Germany.
The original palace was built in the 18th century and was destroyed by an Allied air raid in 1945.
The site was later occupied by the Hans Otto Theater, a modern building shown in the top image from 2012.
The reconstruction of the palace began in 2013 and was completed in 2016.
The reconstructed building, shown in the bottom image from 2024, is now home to the Museum Barberini, an art museum that opened in 2017.
The reconstruction is part of a larger project to rebuild Potsdam's Alter Markt square.

The King's House in Salisbury is a distinguished Grade 1 listed building dating back to the early 13th century.

Originally, it was the prebendal residence for the Abbot of Sherborne and was known as Sherborne Place. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the house was leased to lay tenants, most notably Thomas Sadler, Registrar to the Bishops of Sarum, who hosted King James I there in the early 17th century, leading to the name "The King's House."
