On August 4, Senator Ron Johnson tried to fast-track S. 1306, by asking for unanimous consent on the Senate floor. This bill would strip federal Endangered Species Act protections from gray wolves. It only takes one senator to object and stop that shortcut, and Senator Cory Booker did exactly that.
Speaking in defense of wolves, Booker noted that wolves have been hunted to the point where they now occupy only about 10% of their historic range in the U.S. This is a huge reminder that the Endangered Species Act’s goal isn’t just survival, it’s real recovery across a species’ native range.
This isn’t the first time Booker showed his lovefor wolves. He actually met some of our animals at the Burlington Farm Fair back in 2017 and has remained a steady advocate for them.
A huge thank you to Senator Booker for continuing to be a voice for wolves. And a reminder to everyone: stay engaged, stay informed, and keep pushing for positive change to protect these animals.
It is imperative to note that this bill isn’t dead. It’s the Senate companion to H.R. 845, which already passed the House in December on a 211-204 vote , and its sponsors have said they’ll keep pushing. Booker’s objection just blocked one shortcut, it didn’t end the fight. We need to keep fighting the good fight and speaking up for wolves.
