A Note on Satisfaction
Sitting down to eat without paying attention to how you feel as you have your first bite is setting yourself up for failure.
There is a subtle communication within your body and you won’t notice it if you’re distracted on your phone, the television or even people around you.
This lack of attention affects your satisfaction levels.
How satisfied you are with your meal is dependent on your ability to notice that subtle communication.
The subtle communication of ‘Yes!’ when you eat. The subtle communication of “No!”
Noticing the cues of your body is how you can tell if it’s what your body needs or wants within the moment.
If you don’t tap in to what your body wants you’ll continue to eat until you find that nutrient your body is asking for.
This is why bingeing happens, or a night of eating—you’re searching for that one thing to satisfy.
And it may not even be food. But you won’t notice that if you’re not tuned in to your body.
Here’s my method for tuning in.
When you sit down to eat, take five mindful breaths.
Mindful simply means relax, and pay attention to your breath as you breathe.
By the time you’re done as long as you’re focused, your attention will be within you and the way your body feels, rather than distracted on other things.
Then, as you take your first bite, notice how you feel.
Pay attention to the feelings coming up in your body.
If it’s a “No”—put the food down and find something that says ‘Yes.”
Practice listening to yourself until it becomes second nature.
If you’d like more practice with this, this is one of the things we will go through together in my course Tap In! We’ll work on noticing the feelings of food and saying no, when you know it’s not what you want (among lots of other things). You can find information on the course in bio.
