Which Website Feels More Familiar?

We work with a lot of contractors and small business owners who needed a website fast—but didn’t have much budget to start with.

The problem? Those starter sites often stick around for years without an update. No one's touched them. And in the background, they quietly hurt your reputation and cost you business.

If your site hasn’t had a proper check-up in a while, it might be time. Even a few small updates can go a long way—not just for your customers, but for how Google sees and ranks you.

Here’s a quick example. The site on the left is a rebuild of an outdated, underperforming page. The right shows a modern version—cleaner layout, stronger photos, popup forms, and tracking tools to see what’s working.

Which one do you think looks more trustworthy?

Disclaimer: These are both 'examples' based on real websites. The names and URLs have been changed to protect the innocent!

DIY vs Delegate?? Small Budgets Can Still Think Big!

If you’re a small business owner or grassroots org leader, chances are you’ve worn more hats than a costume shop. But not every task is worth doing DIY style! Even if you're used to figuring everything out on your own, there's nothing wrong with hiring outside help when it "makes sense"

This post breaks things down with an easy to decide action guide:
🎯 When it’s smart to roll up your sleeves and go DIY,
🎯 And when it’s time to call in help so you can focus on making money.

DIY it when:
It’s a one-time task
It’s low-risk or behind the scenes
️ You enjoy the work and have time to learn as you go

Here's the quick guide to help you decide what level of service you'll want to hire as outside help...
Delegate when:
✅It’s outside your skillset
✅It affects your brand’s image or results
✅ It’s recurring and drains your energy
✅You’ve got bigger priorities waiting

Bottom line is that it's ok to seek help when appropriate. Hopefully this guide helps you decide what situations are worthy of your time and when it's worth it to delegate to an outside expert.

Behind the Scenes: 🎬Content Creation in Action
Working with clients often means wearing many hats — marketing coach, tech support, creative director, and sometimes even chef! 😄
I'm always encouraging my clients to get out of their comfort zone and create different types of content, especially some of that involves them on camera. Recently I had to "walk my own talk".

Here’s a peek at how I helped Coach Laura Libby Vinger, a fitness and nutrition coach, capture custom content without a studio — just a clever setup, a little prep, and a lot of heart.
What we accomplished:
✅ Recorded a remote “How To” collaboration about meal prep
✅ Used a tablet mounted overhead for a top-down viewpoint
✅ Combined 3 video windows for a dynamic storytelling layout
✅ Created a functional DIY kitchen studio — yes, that’s actually my countertop!

This process wasn’t just fun — it was effective.
We created a collaborative, on-brand video she can now use to build trust, show off her expertise, and connect with her audience authentically. Plus I got to show off some of my cooking skills and previous restaurant experience! (I will post a link to the video in the comments)
👀 Second photo shows how it all came together!

💡 Want to create content like this without buying studio lights or learning video editing? That’s literally what I’m here for. 😉

I give you permission to brag about yourself!
If you have recently been blessed by a great review, you deserve to give yourself a shout out. The urge to ‘stay humble’ is understandable, but when others are singing your praises, join the chorus by tooting your own horn — At least a little bit!

Here’s how you can maximize on your glowing testimonials:

Feature the testimonial on your website. A strong website that is set up to convert traffic into leads and sales, will feature customer reviews throughout the site. Rather than having them all in one place, spread them out more evenly so that visitors to your site will see at least a few of them regardless of how they navigate your pages.

Use a quote in your footer or email signature. Who doesn’t love a good quote. You can use a portion of a good review as part of your sign off and in your website’s footer. Keep this quote short and to the point, use the quotation marks around it, and attribute it to whoever said it (even if you only use their first name and last initial)

Record a video clip of this quote. With the right approach, you can request to record a 30 second clip of your client stating for the camera what they just wrote publicly. Keep in mind, most people are shy and enjoy their privacy, so don’t be too pushy about it. You can offer an incentive in the form of free or discounted goods or services in the future, or even a gift card to their favorite retailer (A $50-100 Amazon card can help people overcome their shyness).

Make a habit of sharing them. Create some info–graphic templates with your logo and some decorative elements and use them to highlight great reviews, or quoted portions of them. Mix these in with your other social media posts to diversify the way you highlight your business across several platforms. The templates don’t all have to be identical but keep the branding consistent to increase brand recognition.

Comment with “5 Stars” and I will send you a custom Canva template you can use to showcase your own good reviews!

Getting a bad review feels personal, but don’t let it trigger you! If you stay calm and respond in a professional manner, this can actually help your reputation. Try to remember this important tips for dealing with a bad review:

Stay Calm & Professional. Don’t react, but take your time to respond thoughtfully. Remember that others may see this and how you respond is going to make an impression on them.
Thank them for their feedback. It probably won’t be your first thought, but it shows maturity and that you are looking to improve. Even if you disagree with their viewpoint, it gives the impression that you don’t always think you’re right and everyone else is wrong.

Keep your public response short and polite. However you can invite them to continue the conversation privately to hopefully find a solution that makes them satisfied once again. Some sites allow a person to edit or update their review if you work something out. However, don’t approach the conversation with that as the main goal and remember that even your private conversation can be made public, so stay professional throughout.

See it as a learning opportunity. Even if you disagree with part or all of the review, try to think of what steps you can take to prevent similar reviews like this going forward.

Report the obviously fake reviews. This was a problem for a long time and many platforms that take reviews have started cracking down on fake reviews. Even if it is a “good” review in terms of 5 starts, but goes on to promote something else (like crypto), then you should report it because it diminishes your overall reputation online.

How to Ask for Testimonials (Without Making It Weird)
Why do we feel awkward asking for a review? Is it because we are modest and don’t like asking for praise? Is it because we’re insecure about our hard work or fear that it’s not good enough? Regardless if you suffer from “impostor syndrome” or you just like to stay humble, reviews can let others know that you’re someone they want to work with.
Here’s an effective method to achieve good results: Keep it casual, when the timing is right!
When to ask: Usually the best time to ask for a testimonial is after a project has concluded and the client has paid (or renewed for more services). A good guideline is to wait until someone says: “Thank You”
How to Ask: Keep it casual and pressure free: “I’m so glad you’re happy with my (work, service, products, etc), would you mind dropping a quick review on Google or Facebook (Yelp, Amazon, Shopify, etc) to help me reach more people?

Bonus Tip: Make It Easy!
Most people mean well, but they are busy. Make it easy for them to follow through by sending a link or a QR code that goes right to your review page. You can also have a QR printed up on cards or a placard to display in your place of business.

Follow Up: If someone says “Sure, I can do that” but they don’t follow through, you can send them the link / code exactly ONE MORE time, usually in 5-7 days after you first spoke about it. After that, you should not pressure them again, or you risk a less positive review and that helps no one.

Do Reviews Still Matter In 2025?
If you’re not asking for reviews, or people aren’t following up with them, it could be costing you money!

Recent crackdowns of fake reviews are making genuine testimonials more powerful than ever. Now that the major platforms are putting an end to Bots and “review spam”, we need to encourage our Human customers to share their positive experiences.

Whether you’re a builder, baker, or candlestick maker… people are increasingly more likely to try your goods or services if they hear that others are satisfied.
