THIS WEEK’S PHOTOGRAPHY CHALLENGE THEME: “Last Glimpse of Winter”
(Or if you live in the Southern Hemisphere, the first glimpse of the cooler time of year).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We’re approaching spring with large footsteps. And if I’m being honest, I’m a little bit sad to put the winter behind me. I’ve enjoyed resting, not having a guilty conscience that I should be outdoors because it’s warm and the sun is shining. The TV shows are also better in the winter 😂
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I noticed that I took an extraordinarily large number of photos this winter, more than in any previous year. AND I recognised my home as one of the best places to take photos. Btw, you can check out my new “HOME” online photography workshop in my profile by clicking the link in my bio : .etc
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This winter, we had a lot of rain and many, many grey days. But when the sun came out, I felt invited to grab my dog and go for long, long walks through nature with a camera in my rucksack, capturing many detailed photos in the woods, riverside and meadows that surround my village.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is one of the many photos that I captured.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For this week’s challenge I’d like you to take a look through your photography archives this week and find your favourite photo that you took this last winter.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Once you have a photography idea grab your camera, create your version, post it in your feed, and tag me in the text .etc and add the hashtag

How are you feeling about your photography today? Which is the quote that underlines those feelings?

While putting together this list of quotes, I noticed that many of them, although wise, are not necessarily wise to me, which makes photography all the more versatile, expansive, and exciting.

For instance, Susan Sontag’s quote, “Today, everything exists to end in a photograph,” really made me think.

Even though this isn’t realistically possible, it made me think about everything that will be forgotten and how unimportant we are as humans. Yet, we are focused purely on our actions and the way those of others affect us.

But it’s not our world. We’re just guests here.

It’s a wonderful idea for humans to be able to catalogue what we’ve seen and experienced in photos.

The things we enjoy today and are excited about will be a source of possible amusement in the future.

For instance, if you’ve ever looked at Martin Parr’s photography, you will see the importance of capturing an era with your camera.

We always look at photos of great masters in the past and believe they were the most impactful.

However, the images you are taking today will be just as significant for others in the future.

Maybe a little food for thought.

Join the weekly challenge here on Instagram.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are the details:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Each Friday, I will post a new theme, including one or more examples of my photography and some ideas for capturing the theme.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can then grab your camera, create your version, post it in your feed and tag me in the text .etc and add the hashtag
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For this week’s theme, I’d like you to rummage through your archives and find the best photo you took in 2024.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What defines your best photo in 2024? Here are some ideas:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉🏽 It should be a photo you can’t take your eyes off.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉🏽 A photo you were excited to show off on social media.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉🏽 A photo that others praised you for and that may have been recognised as yours even though they didn’t see your name attached to it.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉🏽 You would pay over $100 to have it printed and hang it in a treasured place in your home.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉🏽 You thoroughly enjoyed the process of taking the photo.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉🏽 You may have already known it would turn out great before you even pressed the shutter button.

THANK YOU 2024 FOR ALL THE PHOTOS YOU GAVE ME
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Out of all the unsuccessful photos, kind-of ok ones, lots of very similar ones these are the ones I’ve been going back to time and again.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve used them in posts, projects, to demonstrate in my photography workshops, sold them as stock photos, smartphone backgrounds etc. But on the whole I chose them because they remind me of all the good times from this year.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That’s the beauty of being a photographer, you can create memories just by pressing the shutter-button, and if you know the ropes you’ll have memories captured in stunning photos that you could print out and hang on the wall if you want.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thank you 2024 for all the lessons, both good and bad, that you made me learn, and silently hoping that 2025 will be easier on me.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Thank YOU, my wonderful follower for deciding to follow me and my wonderful little, big Girls with Cameras project.

🤩 🤩 🤩 Our theme this week is “A Single Leaf”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We have a weekly challenge here on Instagram, and I’d love for you to join in.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Your photo might become one of the stars in my Insta-stories, as I’ll be reposting up to 10 of my favourites each week - giving them more reach and getting the right eyes in front of them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
To help you recover from Christmas, I’d like you to grab your camera, go for a long winter walk either in your local park or through a nearby forest and capture:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A SINGLE LEAF
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here’s how I captured the images (or better said, how I almost always go about capturing single leaves):
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
• Look for one that is hanging on its own at the end of a branch
• Get up close and lay your camera’s focus on the edge or one of the mottled details
• Position yourself so that the next object behind it is pretty far away, and
• Set your camera’s aperture to the lowest number (for instance, f2.8), so that the background is visible but not distracting. This gives the photo a sense of three-dimensionality.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
DON’T FORGET TO SAVE THIS POST SO YOU HAVE THE TIPS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS WHENEVER YOU NEED THEM.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Enjoy this week’s theme. I can’t wait to see and share the results.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Dawn
xx
