Let’s be honest, I really don’t think this should have become such a huge social media debate.

Tony Elumelu is gathering young Nigerians, not for a social hangout, but to empower them, fund their ideas, support their businesses, train them and create opportunities for them. Every year, thousands of young people benefit from initiatives connected to his foundation, including grants, training and scholarships.

So yes, I understand that in the UK or other Western environments, someone may casually call him “Tony.” But Nigeria is not abroad. Context matters.

If you are attending a formal gathering in Nigeria with an elder and someone of Mr. Elumelu’s calibre, addressing him as Mr. Elumelu is basic courtesy. It doesn’t mean you are worshipping him. It simply means you understand the culture and the setting you are in.

For me, I would call what happened a mistake, not disrespect. The young lady probably meant no harm, and Mr. Elumelu is right to correct her. But I also don’t understand why people are digging up old videos from interviews abroad to argue that he once allowed an interviewer to call him “Tony.”

Different setting, different context.

When you are in Rome, behave like the Romans.

And honestly, if someone is bringing you into a room to help you, invest in you and open doors for you, the least you can offer is basic respect and courtesy.

We need to stop confusing informality with disrespect, but we also need to stop pretending that cultural etiquette doesn’t matter.
