The Story of Jesus, Son of Mary (Peace Be Upon Him)
Long ago, there was a woman named Mary (Maryam), known for her purity and devotion to God. She lived in prayer and worship, away from the distractions of the world. One day, the angel Gabriel came to her in the form of a man. Frightened, she said, âI seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you!â But Gabriel calmed her heart and said, âI am a messenger from your Lord, to give you glad tidings of a pure child.â
Mary was astonished: âHow can I have a son when no man has ever touched me, and I was never unchaste?â Gabriel replied, âSo it will be. Your Lord says: âIt is easy for Me.ââ And thus, by the will of God, Mary conceived a child without a fatherâa miracle unlike any other.
When her time came, she retreated to a far-off place and gave birth to Jesus (ʿĪsÄ) under a palm tree. In her pain, she heard a voice: âDo not grieve. Your Lord has placed a stream beneath you. Shake the trunk of the palm tree, and fresh dates will fall for you. Eat, drink, and be comforted.â
Carrying the newborn, she returned to her people. Shocked, they accused her: âO Mary! You have brought something terrible!â Mary did not argue; instead, she pointed to the baby. âHow can we speak to an infant?â they mocked. But then, the infant Jesus spoke:
âIndeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a Prophet. He has blessed me wherever I am, and enjoined upon me prayer and charity as long as I live. And He has made me dutiful to my mother, and not arrogant or wicked. Peace is upon me the day I was born, the day I will die, and the day I will be raised alive.â
This was the beginning of his miraculous life.
As he grew, God gave him wisdom and power. Jesus healed the blind and the lepers, gave life to the deadâby Godâs permission. He shaped a bird from clay, breathed into it, and it flew as a living birdâagain, by Godâs permission. These miracles showed the Children of Israel that he was truly a Messenger of God, not a magician.
His disciples, the Hawariyyun, followed him and believed in him. One day they asked: âO Jesus, can your Lord send down to us a table spread with food from heaven?â Jesus prayed, and God sent down a table of heavenly food as a sign. But God warned them: âWhoever disbelieves after this, I will punish him with a punishment unlike any other.â
Meanwhile, many of the leaders rejected him. They plotted to kill him, but God saved him. The Qurâan tells us: âThey did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it was made to appear so to them.â Instead, God raised Jesus up to Himself, and he remains alive until the end of time.
And before the Last Day comes, Jesus will return. He will descend near the white minaret of Damascus, his hands resting on the wings of two angels. He will break the cross, kill the swine, and abolish the false worship that people created after him. He will rule with justice, following the law of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and he will defeat the false messiahâthe Antichrist (al-Dajjal). After that, he will live on earth for a time, then die like all human beings, and God will raise him again on the Day of Judgment.
Thus, the story of Jesus is one of miracles, mercy, and truth. He was never God, nor the son of Godâhe was a mighty Prophet and servant of Allah, born without a father, blessed with miracles, raised to the heavens, and destined to return before the end of time.
