Looking for advice from a top-tier commander?đź––

In my last article, I sought the advice of Vice Admiral Frostriese on performing well in the Planets’ universe. One of his interesting points was that a “good commander [anticipates] ho…

For this article, we're going to try something different -- a cooperative exercise. For full amusement value, I'm going to require not only your attention but also your active participation. Are you sitting comfortably? ...Good. Let's begin. I'd like you all to imagine a scenario with me, something that has actually happened to a real person of our mutual acquaintance. It might even have happened to you....

It's been over two months since the new Victory Score format was pronounced available, and rather longer since it was first announced. It generated rather more comment than most other recent changes, with several players (the usual suspects) convinced it would be very easily broken and others, just as vocal but more open-minded, quite excited to see the prospective change....

(TL;DR: There is none. Be the change.) We've all been there. A dozen turns in, and suddenly our freighter goes POP. Or perhaps it doesn't, but there's a ship heading straight for it. What to do? What's incumbent on us as players, and what as human beings? Full disclosure: The concept for this article came from a message posted at the Contact link on our website....

EDITORIAL We never even noticed the demise of the glossy magazine. One day they were just gone, missing from waiting room tables everywhere as though they’d never been, with only empty racks and dusty outlines to mark their passing. By and large they’re quite unmourned, it’s sad to say. It’s tough to miss the sort of writing one only reads while killing time waiting for a haircut, articles you can put down unfinished without regret....

It was a quiet night in Founder's Landing, which is why I wasn't there. You don't get paid for doing nothing, so I'd taken a trip offworld, going to where the money is. Nothing wrong with that, right? Besides, what could possibly go wrong? "…so he threw the brick up in the air — and it didn't come back down!...

The First Myth of Game Balance: It Exists Planets Nu is not a balanced game. Countless hours of debate have been expended on the topic of game balance: what's wrong with it, how to improve it, wouldn't-it-be-fun-if, and so on. This is fine; my thought is, whatever keeps people interested enough to talk about the game is a good thing....

The pilot awakened to the sound of blaring alarms. The moment he straightened, the cacophony dimmed. He squinted, trying to figure out what was going on, and gradually his surroundings resolved. He was in his cockpit, in the fighter, and from the indicators things were very wrong. Memory started returning, but he quashed it; no time for nonessentials. He ran through his checklist and came to an immediate conclusion: He was totally screwed....

Most modern guides mention the vital importance of building a Merlin early in the game. In Standard, it's needed for spamming starbases and PBP farming; in Classic, it's the same only with SDSFs. And that's saying nothing about what happens when your home cluster runs out of mineables, which could well happen before the Ship Limit hits. What the guides generally don't mention is how, exactly, you're supposed to maintain a decent rate of exploration and expansion while also concentrating on both that first Merlin (and subsequent base-spamming) along with pumping out as many warships as possible before the Limit....

Income was down this month, and for no reason he could see. The population was stable; there was no civil upheaval; expenditures were virtually nil this far into the backwaters. "Humanoid, Feudal. Hm. Let's tweak taxes up half a point and see what happens. Reminder to check back after a couple of cycles. Right; next planet: Phyllirides Beta 7…" It was all in the rhythm: Step-swing; recover....
