So today we took to to meet in memory of my wife’s uncle the Late Michael “Beef” Park the WRC Co-Driver of Markko Märtin who sadly passed away 20 years ago this month on the final leg of Wales Rally Great Britain when their Peugeot 307 WRC left the road and struck a tree.

Incredible event today with thousands of people and a petrol heads absolute dream with hundreds of Cars, Bikes and even tractors!

1 week in to having an EV, as a Petrol Head…

I would never have thought I would ever have gone full electric but a career change (and tax implications) made it a consideration.

So here we are a week later and these are my thoughts so far. This is a Mercedes EQA 250+ “urban edition” with a reported range of around 340 miles. I think most people’s first concern with an EV is “range anxiety” but in the current weather I am seeing around 320 miles of range driving conservatively… but this is a key point - weather! Range is very much impacted by temperature and while it’s only been a week the variances in the morning suggest that the range could be impacted by as much as 20% on a cold morning.

Is it fun to drive? The best answer to that is that it’s ok, it’s very comfortable and the bursts of performance are ok but over all it lacks personality and emotion as a petrol head.

In my opinion there are 3 key things that make or break an EV that people need to be aware of…

1. Do you have a home charger? If not an EV make no sense! That 320 mile range costs me £4.90 to charge at home VS as much as £62.30 at a high speed public charge.

2. Are cars as much entertainment as a mode of transport for you? If so this is going to get boring fairly quickly.

3. This is more specific to this car (and those like it) but all EVs are not built equal. This EV is built on the base of a “normal” internal combustion engine car meaning they have to find somewhere to put the batteries in this case under the rear seats and under the boot. This makes for a small boot space. EVs built as EVs from the ground up tend to have the batteries in the floor pan meaning you actually have more luggage space than what would with an ICE car.

So the old man in me likes this comfortable cheap to run “premium” car… the petrol head knows it’s serves a purpose and is fine but maybe it’s time to get a motor bike for the exciting part (which I am sure my wife would be well up for)

Big thanks to my amazing weekend squad ❤️

After weeks of battling it out in PGA Tour on PC, me and my two best friends finally took our skills to the actual course (driving range) and wow, the IRL graphics were next level. ⛳😂 we even got some free coaching from some local legends.

We wrapped it up with great food including my incredible wife, and our little one who had huge fun having her uncle Matt and Yas over to play. 🥰

Massive thanks to my wife for making sure I had the time to unwind after a couple of very stressful weeks, good friends, good food, family laughter… can’t ask for better. 🙌
