.film by is screening tonight at BFI Southbank in London as part of Black Debutantes: A Collection of Early Works by Black Women Directors
This season celebrates the Black Women and femme filmmakers past and present whose remarkable work and reverberating impact is oftentimes underseen and under discussed.

📍Thursday 29 May 2025 18:15

As per the words of Rógan Graham , the programme is conceived in response to the lack of Black Women directors with filmographies robust enough to support a solo season across the course of a month, Black Debutantes uncovers a number of familiar early works by respected filmmakers alongside films new to UK audiences. […] Recurring themes of love, motherhood, ancestral trauma, the relationship to one’s body, racial violence and filmmaking itself all emerge from these remarkable early films in a range of genres, from coming-of-age and historical dramas to dystopian epics and contemporary independents.

Various obstacles can complicate finding meaningful connections through physical intimacy and beyond, but these three films show that it’s not impossible to overcome them. From trying to satisfy your deepest sexual desires, to forming a loving relationship with someone you just met, to just staying in bed with your loved one and completely forgetting about everything else, this program is dedicated to the search for love and physical intimacy. Don’t forget to stay hydrated!”

/ Listen to the Voices will have its Australian premiere at as part of the program strand FLUX: ART+FILM which celebrates films that expand the language of cinema, blurring the lines between fact and fiction.

Reminiscent of Moonlight (2016) in its tender portrayal of masculinity, this impressive debut feature won the Special Jury Prize CINÉ+ at Locarno 2024.
With a haunting score by Floating Points and Pharoah Sanders, Listen to the Voices captures the aftermath of a grave crime. In 2012, the director’s cousin was murdered in Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana. Created in collaboration with family members, this deeply moving film reckons with the fallout. At its heart is Melrick, a 13-year-old who navigates coming of age in a community marked by violence. Conversations about revenge and forgiveness unfold, while slow-motion scenes of dance and street carnival imbue the film with dreamlike intensity.

Don’t miss the screenings on June 7th and 9th!

travels to in Australia!

The film is part of the EUROPE! VOICES OF WOMEN+ IN FILM initiative.
This year’s directors are united by a shared commitment to illuminating the experiences of those often pushed to the margins. Exploring everything from grief and questions of cultural identity to nuanced portrayals of blindness or deafness, their films offer deeply human stories that demand to be seen and heard. In a time of global uncertainty, they present singular perspectives on life, each marked by striking originality and a sense of hope.

MUYERES by Marta Lallana wins the DOLOMITES WORLD HERITAGE AWARD at ⛰️
Established by the Fondazione Dolomiti UNESCO and SAT SocietĂ  Alpinisti Tridentini - For the best film documenting the awareness within communities of the exceptional universal values recognised by UNESCO and the ability to carry out active conservation of the area.

The jury statement: “In the mountains of Austurias, thanks to old recordings collected by a musicologist, a number of elderly women relive their life in a rural community, revealing the value of singing. The film, masterfully shot in black and white, with moments of extraordinary lyrical force, is also a journey into the past and present lives of the protagonists, who become custodians of a unique intangible heritage to be defended and handed down.”

Thanks to the jury and the festival for this exceptional acknowledgement of the film!

New York Premiere of at New Directors New Films !!

Thanks to the festival for hosting such beautiful screenings and welcoming Maxime Jean-Baptiste to present the film 💙❤️

Some beautiful words about the film:

Listen to the Voices is a highly personal film, but it is heartfelt and told with care. The cinematography is at times, stunning, especially a fabulous sequence of a motorcycle ride at night. Jean-Baptiste is speaking out against the violence in Guiana while depicting how family members work through trauma. But he infuses his film with lovely moments of Melrick playing soccer, riding his bike, or swimming that offset some of the darker moments. There is hope here, and some catharsis, which is what makes this wistful film so engrossing.
Gary M. Kramer, Movie Jawn

This is a wonderful film that, as with many New Directors New Films selections over the years, is not a big and flashy film that gives you a big emotional moment. Insead it is a film of quiet power that sneaks up on you and haunts you for days. Its a film that  produces emotions, and perhaps a few tears, not just when you see it the first time, but later when you are thinking about it. LISTEN TO THE VOICES haunted me.

Hanami will be part of the series “L.A. Rebellion: Then and Now” at Film Lincoln Center
This series pairs well-known and lesser-known L.A. Rebellion films with recent works by a vibrant new generation of artists hailing from Africa, its global diaspora, and the U.S., alongside prominent works from the L.A. filmmakers’ African contemporaries, to show how these intergenerational filmmakers share a common aim: to reflect the complexity of Black experiences and reframe how Black communities and lives are portrayed to global audiences.

We feel very honoured that Hanami is paired with Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust (1991), both poetic stories of insular women and migration.

The series is curated by and co-organized by Madeline Whittle.
