On Friday, CSHS held their annual Pink Out pep rally in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Many events took place including performances from the Emerald Belles, Dragon Cheer and the Dragonwokeez as well as games organized by Student Council. “Ranch wrestling” organized by Dragons Give Back was the final event and pitted champion Lady Dragon Wrestler Cora Hayes (12) against Lady Dragon Soccer defender Sydney Martin (11) who wrestled against each other in an inflatable pool filled with ranch dressing.

“Since I didn’t do wrestling but Cora did, we decided to come together and plan out the moves just to make sure it was safe and fun for both of us,” Martin said. “I had a really good time but I smelled really bad. It was really fun.”

The funds raised by Dragons Give Back at the event go directly to Kinetic Kids, an organization that provides children with special needs opportunities to participate in sports, fine art and educational programs. Approximately $670 was raised at the event.

Senior cross country runner Caden Leonard crosses the finish line at the District meet in first place with a time of 14:29.0. The varsity boys team finished first and varsity girls took second in the meet with Leonard taking home the individual district championship. Similarly, the JV boys team placed first and JV girls second with Cameron Perez (9) as the boys individual champion and KC Dukes (10) the girls individual champion.

“Individually I performed how I wanted,” Leonard said. “Team-wise we performed really well. Everyone running would trade individual titles for one team title, and we had guys step up and get the job done.”

The teams will head to Lubbock for the Region meet on Oct. 21.

This past Wednesday, Dragon nation celebrated homecoming in Town Square with the annual parade and carnival hosted by Student Council. Multiple clubs held booths with a variety of different activities ranging from face painting to arm-wrestling tournaments.

Principal Shatina Lewis emceed the out-of-school pep rally which included performances from the Emerald Belles officers, varsity cheer and the Dragon Band. To end the night, seniors Lily Fraga and Zac Hays were crowned homecoming queen and king on top of town hall.

“It being my last HoCo parade was bittersweet,” Samantha Mickan (12) said. “I loved getting to see all of the different sports and organizations come together for our community. Throughout the past four years, I have seen how far Dragon Cheer has come as a team and the friendship as seniors we have grown together. Realizing we are the ones that the younger generation looks up to in our community is so special; it motivates me to be a better person every day. I am so glad to be a Dragon, not only as I receive my education, but always as a part of the Dragon family.”

This past Wednesday, Sept. 17, Student Council held Carroll Senior High School’s annual “blood battle” drive in competition with Byron Nelson High School. Nearly 120 units were donated during the eight hour event.

“It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be at all. I thought it was good,” Olivia McCarrick (12) said. “This was my first time doing it. I think the worst part was the finger prick and the best part was the snacks.”

StuCo plans on hosting two more blood drives during this school year. Seniors are eligible to receive a cord if they participate in at least two blood drives.

Hosted by principal Ms. Shatina Lewis, the first CSHS pep rally of the year featured performances from band, Belles, cheer and a touchdown celebration game. During the game, three teams of four faced off to show off their moves. Though the team of volleyball girls and the team of teachers tried, they could not defeat the football guys.

“The touchdown celebration was from the Minnesota Vikings,” defensive lineman Jake Lucky (12) said. “We voted and felt like it was the best NFL touchdown celly and so we recreated that. I think we more than deserved to win. No offense to the competition, but I think we were far superior in our celebration tactics.”

Tonight, the Dragons (3-0) will take on the Trinity Trojans (3-0), bringing back an old-school district rivalry. Kick off is at 7 p.m. at Dragon Stadium.

Cast and crew of the fall musical "Mamma Mia!" are currently in dress rehearsals, preparing for opening night this Thursday.

"Mamma Mia!" is a musical set on a Greek island, following a young woman who invites three men from her mother’s past to her wedding, hoping to discover which one is her father. The story, told through the music of Swedish pop band ABBA, delves into themes of family, love and friendship.

“Being in 'Mamma Mia!' has been a crazy experience for us all, but it’s been so much fun," Harper Brown (11) said. "Putting everything we’ve learned so far into one piece is never easy but I think we’re gonna have a great show. I’ve made so many new friends doing this show and I’m so excited to see how it turns out on stage.”

Shows are set for Thursday, Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Carroll Senior High auditorium. Tickets are available for purchase at https://secure.payk12.com/school/_/86/4234.

This morning at Carroll Senior High School, 32 seniors were officially awarded as National Merit Semifinalists. Parents of these individuals were invited to come and surprise their kids by gathering in the library where refreshments were provided.

“It was really great to see my hard work paid off,” Nandita Shetty (12) said. “Being recognized by the school through the ceremony made me feel amazing. It was a lot of fun to celebrate with my dad and my friends.”

According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, Semifinalists are the highest scorers in the United States and represent less that one percent of each state’s high school seniors. Students who qualify as semifinalists, based on their PSAT performance, are the only program participants who can advance to the finalist level to compete for National Merit scholarships.
