This is not a criticism of our youth, but it is a grief.
I am deliberately introducing nursery rhymes, patriotic songs, and Americana songs to my students. Yesterday we sang "I've Been Working On the Railroad." Today we sang "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean." Both were unfamiliar to many, even most of my students.
I grieve. The distance that has grown between our shared cultural icons and our children and youth saddens and frightens me. It is, I believe a profound loss. It is evidence that once joyfully shared cultural moorings are now unknown and foreign to our heirs.
