For politico/broadcasting nerds.... Just stumbled on this pic (circa 1987-89) of BBC Radio Newcastle election studio production base (may have been local council rather than general election). This was where all the results were phoned in (pre mobile & internet!) or via ISDN line feeds. All staff were needed to make it happen.
