RIP David Johansen, proto-punk icon, glam pioneer, lounge lizard, and ultimately a lover of good old rock and roll. Hailing from the great state of Staten Island, he created a legacy that echoes through decades of music.

FAREWELL FROM SHEL

(We are gutted to tell you that the great Shel Talmy has left the building. He passed away peacefully at home yesterday after suffering a stroke over the weekend. We will have more information, and links to obituaries, shortly, but most importantly we want you to know that Shel thought the world of you, his FB followers and supporters, and to that end, some time ago he prepared the following statement that he would like shared now - preferably with 'You Really Got Me', 'My Generation', 'Friday On My Mind' or your choice of favourite ST production cranked in the background).

"Hi to all, and many thanks to all of you who have been reading my rock stories for all this time, it has been greatly appreciated!

Please note, that if you're reading this now, this is my final vignette, as I am no longer residing on this plane of existence, and have “moved on”, to wherever that may be.

I'd like to think there is something beyond where I was to where I am now, assuming that the millions of suppositions as to what is next, are accurate.

I'd like to think that I'm thoroughly enjoying my new “residence”, and that the countless rumors that there is a big working "studio in the sky" are true, and that we are, dare I say, making heavenly music!

I am also hoping that I am currently engaged in renewing relationships with a ton of friends and acquaintances, many of which go back for decades.

I've had a good run, and I am delighted it lasted as long as it did. I'm also delighted that I am told I have a legacy that will last even longer.

I look forward to meeting some of you in the future who are reading this, but LOL, don't hurry to get here, I'm not going anywhere!"

In spite of the over-mythologizing and romantizing of Kurt Cobain’a life and death (27 Club, blah blah), the tragedy of his loss 30 years ago today remains a palpable “what might have been” in the history of popular music. His intense love of creating music was never more clear than in this haunting performance of a song that dates almost as far back as the Civil War.

In introducing the song, he jokes about being offered Leadbelly’s guitar for $500K; the guitar Cobain plays here sold for $6 million. I imagine him somewhere rolling his eyes at that and saying ‘oh well, whatever…”

Happy St. Patrick’s day to all! Though I have not a lick of 🇮🇪 blood in me, I’m always inspired by the deep pride and well-grounded roots of the Irish and - of course - love their literary and musical gifts to the world.

Here’s a band to know: Fontaines DC [as in Dublin City]. Their members share a common love for Yeats and Joyce, and for some reason named themselves after the fictional singer in The Godfather, Johnny Fontaine. How can you not love a band like that? Hard-driving, with just the right mix of 70’s punk, garage-rock and modern sensibilities - with smart lyrics, to boot. If this sound is up your alley, don’t pass up the opportunity to see them live.

Today is the Ides of March. This post is about The Ides of March, but it’s not about Julius Caesar. It’s about the band The Ides of March and their funky, jazzy song ‘Vehicle’ from 1970. An ultimate one-hit wonder, their lead singer and songwriter Jim Peterik was not - he later founded Survivor, writing “Eye of the Tiger” as well as other hit songs by .38 Special and Sammy Hagar.

‘Vehicle’ - opens with a very questionable first line about entering a stranger’s black sedan filled with ‘pictures’ and ‘candy’. Huh? Yeah, beware the Ides of March, for sure.

RIP Eric Carmen. We're losing far too many talents and legends this year.

"Go All the Way", "Overnight Sensation", "All By Myself", "Hungry Eyes", "Almost Paradise" " Make Me Lose Control", and the list goes on...

Whether you knew him for his work with the power pop group extraordinaire The Raspberries or for his solo work in the 70s and major pop resurgence in the 80s, Carmen's voice is part of the soundtrack of many of our lives.

Go All the Way HD is performed by Raspberries. Released in July 1972 and written by band leader Eric Carmen, the song reached the Top 5 on three principal US...

Revisiting this post from a couple years ago, in memory of Karl Wallinger of The Waterboys and World Party, who passed away yesterday.

One of my favorites of 1985 - epic and grand, like bright white moonlight bursting through the clouds.

——————————

Released April, 1985

A song that pulls out all the stops to epitomize “Big Music”: epic, majestic, describing the feeling that occurs when the veil of everyday life is lifted to reveal the grandeur of the universe.

Inspired by Prince’s sound at the time (though not about him, as has been suggested by some), it’s actually a song about the visionaries among us who can see the larger reality of life, while we “ordinaries” can only see glimpses. An ode to the artists, the dreamers, and those who are connected to the divine, the music throws in every kind of sonic effect available to underscore the ambition of what writer and group leader Mike Scott was trying to achieve.

The song has had a long and fruitful life beyond its initial release, being covered by many artists and used in many films and television shows during moments when the protagonist has an epiphany or triumph of some kind. Almost cliched by now, but still has the ability to move.

A perfect song of inspiration, and a highlight of 1985.
