72-year-old Jerene Matta was found brutally murdered in her home in 1986. She’d been attacked inside her bedroom, and forensics collected scrapings from under her fingernails in hopes of finding her killer.

While processing the crime scene, detectives discovered that someone tried multiple times to access Jerene’s bank account—first at one ATM, then crossing the street to another where they finally withdrew a small amount of cash.

Surveillance from the Wheatland Bank in downtown Yakima captured the suspect using her card. Hooded coat. Balaclava. Black-rimmed glasses. Their identity? Completely hidden.

When demolition crews entered an abandoned home in Rochester, New York, they were prepared to deal with asbestos — not discover a crime scene.

Inside, they found the body of 44-year-old Jaklyn Baccoli, a woman whose final moments were marked by brutal violence.

As investigators began piecing together her life and the events leading up to her death, they uncovered a complicated story of addiction, survival, and street whispers — and a possible suspect whose account doesn’t add up. What they don’t have is enough evidence to close the case. And someone out there still knows what happened.

If you have any information about the murder of Jaklyn Baccoli, please contact the Rochester Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit.
