Lodwar is the largest town in northwestern Kenya, situated west of Lake Turkana. It serves as the capital of Turkana County and is a significant administrative and commercial hub.

Established around 1933 by a trader named Shah Mohamed, Lodwar grew from a small trading post to a bustling town. Its economy revolves around trade, agriculture, livestock rearing, and tourism.

While experiencing growth due to oil discoveries, Lodwar faces challenges like limited infrastructure and access to basic services.

The band features Turkana artists Jackson Nakuwa, Apuu Mourine , Ekoromwe Ekori Ero , and Elizabeth Korkel, along with Nairobi’s Eddie Grey

Their performance will showcase Northern Kenya’s rhythms fused with modern influences in a night that celebrate the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Turkana and Matheniko elders from Kenya and Uganda conducted a traditional cleansing ritual, known as “Amook,” at the Lokiriama Peace Accord Monument. The ritual was prompted by the unexpected fall of a tree on the site, which holds deep historical significance as the location where the 1973 peace agreement between the two communities was sealed with the burial of weapons.

Led by Mzee Ichor Imana of Turkana and Paul Lokitkori of Matheniko, the elders performed traditional rituals including the sacrifice of bulls, libations, chants, and prayers. The monument was also smeared with animal fat and chime as part of the purification process.

The Turkana, originally from the hills north of Mount Elgon, migrated toward Lake Rudolf (L. Turkana) in the 18th century, taking over most of the territory around the lake. This region is one of the driest in East Africa, and it has been argued that their wars were not aimed at conquering territory but rather at capturing cattle to replace losses incurred during frequent droughts. Despite this, they drove out the original inhabitants and gained a reputation as fierce fighters.
The Turkana’s military organization was based on age-sets, known as asapan, which were sub-divided into territorial sections. Political leadership was provided by ritual divers, or ngimoru. Notably, outstanding figures rose to significant positions within the tribe, inspired by other pastoralist groups. This institutional structure clearly defined military roles, especially during the 19th century, when significant leaders such as Lokiriong and Lokirong flourished.
