🇿🇦 SA UPDATE | Monday - 28 September 2026

Here's what's happening in South Africa today:👇🏼

◼️ No more ‘Ja Baas’: “AfriForum must be called out for what it is, a racist organisation that has made a political project of attacking the ANC and resisting transformation,” ANC National Spokesperson, Bhengu said. “It peddles lies to deepen division, then wraps its campaigns in the language of justice. Justice that they had actively denied to black people under apartheid for years.” Bhengu said that the attack on the ANC’s Secretary General belongs to that same political playbook. AfriForum longs for a country where black people are expected to bow their heads and answer, ‘Ja baas’. That country is gone, and the ANC will never allow it to return.”

◼️ We can’t be a country where people just pick up guns and start shooting at random: Speaking to the media in Ekurhuleni on Sunday, Ramaphosa noted that violence and criminality continue to spread. “This is the level of criminality that we must bring down, and our security forces are now going to continue pulling out all stops. “It cannot go on like this, and the clear instruction to our security forces is that we must bring the levels of criminality and violence down.

◼️ SA’s secret R84 billion economy: The amount represents a significant portion of South Africa’s total GDP, with illicit to***co and alcohol sales accounting for the largest share, along with illegal mining operations. The Global Organised Crime Index ranked South Africa as having the 7th-highest criminality score among 193 surveyed countries, at 7.43 out of 10. South Africa also received the second-highest criminality score in Africa and the highest out of 13 Southern African countries.

◼️ Warning for South Africans with car trackers: A Cartrack client has escalated a dispute to the National Consumer Commission after the company denied his R150,000 warranty claim for a stolen car, citing his failure to perform mandatory quarterly unit tests. This case serves as a warning that tracking companies can enforce strict contractual conditions to void warranty payouts.

◼️ SA has a SIM card problem: South Africa has a significant plastic SIM card problem, with mobile network operators issuing as many as 200 million SIM cards a year in a country with only around 25 million economically active people. This indicates a high level of churn and waste, and these plastic SIM cards ultimately end up in landfills, contributing significantly to pollution. Telkom recently told MyBroadband it supported a move away from physical cards, but this must be customer-driven.

🇿🇦 SA UPDATE | Saturday - 26 September 2026

Here's what's happening in South Africa today:👇🏼

◼️‘Dangerous, misleading narrative’: South Africa’s ambassador to the United States (US), Roelf Meyer, has rejected claims of “political persecution” against white farmers, warning that such rhetoric risks damaging bilateral relations and misrepresenting the country’s crime crisis. Meanwhile, Afrikaners for South Africa (Afsa) slammed lobby group Lex Libertas’ planned display of 3 000 white crosses in the US, warning it exploits farm victims’ suffering to push a narrow political agenda, misleads Americans about South Africa, and risks deepening racial divisions.

◼️ Hidden forces boosting SA’s rand: South Africa is likely to emerge as an unexpected beneficiary of global trends, which will bring to an end the era of the rand’s consistent weakness against the US dollar. These trends include rising global debt levels, while South Africa gets its finances in order, increased polarisation, technological disruption, and the demographic decline of developed economies.

◼️ R3-per-litre increase for petrol in SA: If the fuel price adjustments were made today and the slate levy was not adjusted, motorists buying unleaded 95 would pay R29.92 per litre inland and R29.05 per litre on the coast. The primary reason for the exponential increase is the surge in oil and petroleum product prices, driven by the ongoing US–Iran conflict. If oil prices remain elevated and the rand does not strengthen substantially against the dollar, petrol could cost R30 or more per litre next month.

◼️ Diabetes is SA’s biggest killer: Diabetes is wearing South Africa’s Grim Reaper crown once again, claiming about 79 lives a day and ranking as the country’s biggest killer, ahead of TB and HIV. Stats SA's latest Mortality Report, released this month, shows diabetes accounted for 6.1% of the 474,366 deaths recorded in 2024. Diabetes, a chronic disease that affects how the body regulates blood sugar, hit women hardest, accounting for 7.9% of all female deaths.

◼️ Norwood man apologises for racist confrontation outside synagogue: Rahamaan alleged that Plett called him the K-word and threatened his family before driving away, after which he followed Plett to Chabad of Norwood and filmed him there. The footage showed Plett aiming racist abuse at Rahamaan and referring to people being killed in Gaza. The SA Jewish Board of Deputies described his conduct as offensive and unacceptable, the SA Jewish Report reported.

🇿🇦 SA UPDATE | Friday - 25 September 2026

Here's what's happening in South Africa today:👇🏼

◼️ Medicine prices rise 2.88% as industry warns of shortages: SA's pharmaceutical industry says rising input costs are putting pressure on medicine supply, with shortages emerging as manufacturers struggle to absorb higher costs. Pharmisa chairperson Stavros Nicolaou said the January increase was too low to absorb rising costs faced by manufacturers. He said the situation deteriorated further from March because of the Gulf oil crisis and disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, with some input costs rising 30% to 40%.

◼️ Trump administration to welcome up to 17,500 more White South Africans: Last week, the U.S. imposed new sanctions on South African officials who it said were responsible for discriminating against Afrikaners. The Afrikaner resettlement effort is projected to cost the U.S. government $500 million, the notice to Congress said. While the second Trump administration has effectively shut down the U.S. refugee resettlement program for most people fleeing persecution and violence around the world, it has made an exemption for Afrikaners, resettling thousands of them over the past year and a half.

◼️ 'Inaccurate' women's crime data: The Portfolio Committee on Police is probing allegations that crime statistics involving women could be inaccurate and that police stations with high incidences of crime have remained unchanged. Cameron said adding up the quarterly figures did not produce the annual totals. He said some offences had been counted more than once, so that the women-and-children subset could exceed the total number of victims. He said there were also inconsistencies in recording victims’ ages and sexes and in linking victims to the correct charges.

◼️ Constitutional Court warning for private schools in SA: Private schools in South Africa cannot assume that their children can never be excluded because of unpaid school fees. This is because the legal position differs significantly between public and independent schools, with private schools operating under contractual agreements with parents. However, private schools also cannot simply terminate a learner’s enrolment without due consideration of constitutional rights.

◼️ New rules for traffic police in SA – including when they can arrest you: Traffic wardens are responsible as first responders to secure and protect incident and accident scenes, offering roadside assistance to the public, and even enforcing regulations regarding stray, injured, or dead animals on public roads. The Gazette also outlined pedestrian enforcement responsibilities, including monitoring pedestrian adherence to road safety rules and performing vehicle area patrols. During an arrest, wardens can demand the full names and residential address of any person they have the power to arrest, reasonably suspect of committing or attempting to commit an offence.

🇿🇦 SA UPDATE | Thursday - 24 September 2026

Here's what's happening in South Africa today: 👇

◼️ SA fails to answer the US’ Five Asks: Papenfus was part of a delegation that went to the United States and was one of the first to learn of Washington’s four, which has now become five, demands for South Africa. The White House said meeting these demands is critical to restore diplomatic relations with Pretoria. He warned that the government’s refusal to engage with Washington’s demands put South Africa in a vulnerable position. The five asks of South Africa are:

◼️ RIP ProNutro: PepsiCo pulls the plug after 64 years: PepsiCo is discontinuing ProNutro in South Africa, 64 years after it was launched. This comes five months after the group faced backlash for its “new generation" ProNutro that consumers rejected. PepsiCo says, despite its best efforts, it could not recreate the original taste and texture with new technology.

◼️ Mexican cartel’s SA m**h empire exposed: South Africa is the "perfect place" to produce m**hamphetamine, a security source told AFP. It has huge expanses to hide the labs, global sea and air connections and "corruption, which plays a big role", he said. The large-scale production and transit of the synthetic drugs in Africa is also fuelling consumption there, worrying authorities across the region.

◼️ Homeowners warned of these criminal tactics: Another tactic involves wall lights, floodlights, and solar-powered outdoor fixtures that can be smashed, unscrewed or disconnected, creating dark areas around doors, windows, and gates. Despite the declines, more than 148,000 residential burglary and robbery cases were still recorded nationally.
