The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved significant success in preventing elephant-train collisions in the Northeast through technology-driven measures, enhanced surveillance and coordinated efforts with the Forest Department. From January to September this year, prompt intervention by railway personnel helped save the lives of 255 elephants at different locations.
According to data provided by NFR, the rescued elephants included 106 in Alipurduar Division, 14 in Rangiya Division, 122 in Lumding Division and 15 in Tinsukia Division.
To prevent elephant-train collisions, NFR has introduced several modern and technology-based measures. Among these is an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) powered by Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology, which detects the movement of elephants near railway tracks and generates immediate alerts.
Besides, NFR has implemented night-time and temporary speed restrictions based on elephant presence, intensified patrolling, enhanced awareness among loco pilots and train guards, installation of cautionary signboards, clearance of vegetation along railway tracks, and real-time coordination with the Forest Department.
The ‘Plan B’ system has also been introduced in vulnerable locations. Under this system, the sound of buzzing bees is played to keep elephants away from railway tracks. At the same time, construction of underpasses at selected locations is being undertaken to facilitate the safe movement of wildlife.
NFR is also regularly conducting awareness campaigns among train crew, railway employees, pantry car staff and passengers, urging them not to throw food waste along railway tracks. Railway authorities pointed out that discarded food can attract elephants and other wild animals towards the tracks, increasing the risk of accidents.
Railway authorities stated that every incident involving an elephant-train collision is treated with utmost seriousness and investigated in accordance with prescribed safety protocols.
By strengthening technology-based surveillance, field-level vigilance and coordination with the Forest Department, NFR continues to work towards wildlife conservation and ensuring safer railway operations across the Northeast.

Inter-Divisional Railway Kavi Sammelan Organized in Lumding

On the occasion of the closing ceremony of Hindi Month 2026, a magnificent Kavi Sammelan (Poets' Meet) was organized on Wednesday, 30th September at the Lumding Railway Divisional Headquarters. In the event, the poets of the Railways enthralled the officers and employees present with their captivating presentations and received wide applause.

The program was organized by the Rajbhasha Department, Lumding. The Divisional Railway Manager, Sameer Lohani, inaugurated the program by lighting the ceremonial lamp. On this occasion, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Milan Kumar Singh and other officers were present. A large number of railway employees were also present to listen to the poets who had come from various divisions of N.F. Railway.

The program was a complete success due to the tireless efforts and excellent coordination of Deputy Chief Rajbhasha Officer & Sr. Divisional Personnel Officer, Garima Sodhi, Rajbhasha Officer, Naba Kumar Roy, Sr. Translator of Rajbhasha Department, Lumding, Raj Kumar Chauhan, Sr. Translator, Umashankar Thakur, Jr. Translator, Ashok Kumar and Jr. Translator, Bijoya Singha. It was highly appreciated by all the officers, employees and poets present.

The responsibility of compering the program was shouldered by Umashankar Thakur, who kept the audience spellbound throughout the program with his excellent couplets, impressive style and effortless anchoring. He was ably supported with great skill and enthusiasm by Ashok Kumar, Junior Translator.

Among the distinguished railway poets were Vijay Kumar Yadav from the General Manager's Office (Guwahati), Vinay Kumar from New Guwahati, Raj Kumar Chauhan from the Divisional Rajbhasha Department (Lumding), Praveen Kumar Singh from the Chief Travelling Ticket Inspector Office (Katihar), Sudhir Kumar Mehta from the Sr. Divisional Operations Manager Office (Katihar), Amod Kumar from New Bongaigaon, Amit Kumar from Loco Office (New Jalpaiguri), Pankaj Kumar Singh from Katihar Division (Dalkhola), Binay Kumar from Supervisors' Training Centre (Bongaigaon), Parthajit Kalita from the Sr. Divisional Commercial Manager Office (Lumding), and Jitendra Sharma from the Multi-Disciplinary Training Centre (Lumding).
Rajbhasha Officer, Naba Kumar Roy welcomed all the poets with Assam's traditional 'Phulam Gamucha'.

All the poets entertained the audience present with their poetic recitations one by one and left their mark as strong literary creators of the Railways. At the end of the program, all the poets were presented with a memento reflecting the culture of Assam as a token of remembrance and were bid farewell with a dinner. The arrangements for accommodation and catering for all the poets were also made smoothly.

During the event, it was discussed that similar Kavi Sammelans should be organized in other divisions and workshops to bring out the literary talent of the Railways. Everyone is of the opinion that such programs will not only promote the propagation of the Official Language Hindi but will also increase interest in Hindi among railway officers and employees.

AISMA Safety Seminar Organized in Lumding

Under the aegis of the All India Station Masters' Association (AISMA), Lumding Branch, a grand Safety Seminar and Annual General Meeting (AGM) was organized recently, at the Railway Institute, Lumding. The program commenced with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by the guests.

On this occasion, senior officers of Lumding Division were present on the dais, including Milan Kumar Singh, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Lumding Division as the Chief Guest, Garima Sodhi, Senior Divisional Personnel Officer, Krishna Prasad, Senior Divisional Operations Manager, Arun Kumar Singh, Assistant Divisional Safety Officer, and Bappi Sarkar, Assistant Divisional Operations Manager.

From the association, the office bearers present included Kamlesh Rajbongshi, Zonal President (AISMA), Amaresh Kumar, Divisional President, Anand Kumar Jha, Lumding Branch President, Biltu Singh, Lumding Branch Secretary, Rajiv Nandi, Lumding Branch Treasurer and Station Master (Longchiliet), Ramji Verma, Divisional Secretary, Alakh Niranjan Kumar, Traffic Inspector, Amarendra Kumar, Traffic Inspector, and Santosh Barnwal, Traffic Inspector.

The entire program was compered by Baishakhi Dey Kalita, Reservation Supervisor working in the Sr. Divisional Commercial Manager's Office. At the end of the meeting, Ranjit Kumar, CWM (Kamakhya), delivered the vote of thanks, expressing heartfelt gratitude to all the chief guests and fellow Station Masters who attended the program and thanked them for making the event a success.

In line with the motto of AISMA - "AISMA FOR MASTER'S : MASTER'S FOR NATION", special emphasis was laid on giving topmost priority to safety in train operations during the seminar. The speakers said that the Station Master is the backbone of the Railways and his role is the most crucial in safe train operations.

The following subjects were discussed in detail in the seminar:

1. Strict adherence to safety rules.
2. Precautions in the operation of signals and points.
3. Safe operation of trains during the foggy season.
4. Discussion on the problems of Station Masters and their solutions.

In their address, the main speakers Shri Kamlesh Rajbongshi, Anand Kumar Jha and Amarendra Kumar said that, "There can be no compromise on safety. A small mistake can lead to a major accident, therefore every Station Master has to remain vigilant."

In the Annual General Meeting, the future strategies of the organization, welfare of the members and expansion of the Lumding branch were also discussed. The program concluded with the National Anthem.

On this occasion, Station Masters from various stations of N.F. Railway, railway employees and distinguished persons were present in large numbers. All the guests were traditionally welcomed by the Lumding Branch by felicitating them with the traditional Assamese 'Gamusa'.

A new executive committee for the upcoming year was also constituted with the consent of all members present in the meeting.

The newly formed committee includes Amaresh Kumar Mishra (President), Manas Shankar Roy (secretary), Manoj Thakur (Secretary), and Dipanjali Nanda Baruah Choudhury (Media In-charge President and Secretary).

The Durga Puja Committee of Tarapur Kalimohan Road, Silchar, is giving a distinctive architectural touch to this year’s celebrations by constructing its puja pandal in the style of the Shri Rameshwara Swamy Temple in Chennai.
The elaborately designed pandal is attracting attention for its temple-inspired architecture and intricate decorative work. The organisers have sought to recreate the grandeur and traditional appeal of the South Indian temple through the pandal’s design.
The preparations are progressing rapidly as the Durga Puja festivities approach, with artisans and committee members working to complete the structure and decorations in time.
The unique theme is expected to be one of the major attractions for devotees and visitors during this year’s Durga Puja celebrations in Silchar.

Dima Hasao U-17 Girls Basketball Team Felicitated for Runner-Up by Council Chairman Mohet Hojai at Haflong

The Dima Hasao Under-17 Girls Basketball Team, which secured the first runner-up position in the All Assam Under-17 Girls Basketball Tournament, was felicitated by Dima Hasao Autonomous Council Chairman Mohet Hojai at Haflong on Thursday.
The felicitation programme was organised at the Conference Hall of the Dima Hasao Sports Association, where the players were honoured for their impressive performance in the tournament.
The tournament was held from September 28 to 30 at the N.F. Railway Indoor Basketball Court in Maligaon, Guwahati, under the aegis of the Assam Basketball Association, in association with FIBA and the Indian Basketball Association.
The Dima Hasao team delivered a strong performance throughout the tournament and advanced to the final. However, in a closely fought title clash, the team narrowly lost to N.F. Railway by just two points, going down 58–60 to finish as runners-up.
During the felicitation ceremony, Chairman Mohet Hojai praised the players for their talent, discipline, teamwork and fighting spirit. He said the team’s achievement was a matter of pride for Dima Hasao district.
Hojai further said that the Council was giving priority to the development of the younger generation, particularly by encouraging talented sportspersons. He added that the budget for the Sports and Youth Welfare Department had also been increased with the objective of providing greater encouragement and support to emerging athletes.

N.F. Railway Employees’ Union Seeks CM’s Intervention on Four Demands for Silchar Rail Infrastructure

Seeking to strengthen railway connectivity and infrastructure in the Barak Valley, the Silchar branch of the N.F. Railway Employees’ Union has submitted a memorandum to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, urging his intervention on four key demands concerning Silchar and the Badarpur railway sub-division.
The memorandum, submitted on Wednesday, sought priority measures to improve railway infrastructure and operational facilities in Silchar and the surrounding region.
The union highlighted the strategic importance of Silchar as a major railway centre of the Barak Valley and as an important rail gateway connecting Assam with Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura. It stated that railway connectivity in the region is crucial not only for passenger movement but also for the transportation of essential commodities, freight and the broader economic activities of the Northeast.
As its first demand, the union sought early implementation of the proposed Lanka–Moinarbond alternative railway route. According to the memorandum, a substantial portion of the existing Lumding–Badarpur railway line passes through difficult hilly terrain and remains vulnerable to landslides and adverse weather conditions, particularly during the monsoon. Such disruptions can affect rail connectivity to the Barak Valley and neighbouring states. The proposed alternative route, it said, could help provide a more stable and reliable railway connection to the region.
The second demand relates to the expansion of Silchar railway station and yard towards the town end. The union has requested that the feasibility of extending the station and yard, if technically possible, up to the vicinity of the Football Academy ground be examined. It has also sought cooperation from the state government in transferring any required government land to the Railways for the proposed expansion.
The third demand calls for the early implementation of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at Silchar railway station. Describing Silchar as a major railway gateway to the Barak Valley, the union urged that the modernisation project be implemented within a defined timeframe without further delay. It stressed the need for improved passenger amenities, better entry and exit arrangements, cleanliness, facilities for persons with disabilities, smoother passenger movement and better integration of the railway station with the city’s infrastructure.
The fourth and significant demand is for a fresh feasibility examination of establishing a separate railway division with Silchar as its headquarters. The union pointed out that the Lumding Division covers a vast geographical area and is connected not only with the Barak Valley but also with railway services and establishments in Tripura and adjoining regions.
According to the union, railway employees and representatives from distant areas often face considerable travel time and communication-related difficulties while reaching Lumding. It therefore urged the authorities to reconsider the feasibility of a separate railway division headquartered at Silchar in the interest of improved administration, operational efficiency and better coordination of railway services in the region.
